There's no legal reason you couldn't, but record labels will usually include a provision in their contracts prohibiting the artist from doing this.

Im a singer, 17 years old, and im on my own with trying to find my way into getting signed to a record label. I want to find a few showcases where i can sing in front of people who can help me to get there. Is this possible or is there any other way i can go about doing this?

No, not anyone. The reason clown-a$..s rappers keep getting signed is because social control has alot to do with music. People can deny it all they want but it's not a coinsidence that rappers and that whole world in general is full of complete morons right now. Here's the thing, many rappers today are discovered mainly one of three ways. 1. High level of online/underground hype. 2. You're friends with a big name rapper. 3. You knew how to sell yourself to an A&R person. (very very few make it this way) about 95% of rappers out right now came into the game in one of those three categories, the rest are pretty much by accident. About 60% Underground rappers for the most part are lame copies of the mainstream who want to make it big. The other 40% are WAY TOO conscious for the mainstream, another thing is that good underground rappers can't be neatly grouped together into one category for MTV/BET etc.. so the listener would end up having a choice, which in many ways is bad as you can't ping-pong the listener to different artists as you see fit. What you call sucky rappers the industry calls 'assets'. They're used to control listeners in mass and steer them towards the ideals, fashions, products, and mentality they want you too see. many few people notice so many artists in the mainstream today are pretty much the same identity cut and dressed to look like something else. The mainstream is a machine dude, people really need to accept it and make as much money as you can underground. To answer you question, yes anyone can be signed to a record label BUT, you have to completely change your image and sound to be just a bit different that what's out there now, but no so much that it can't be nicely grouped together with it.

Yeah. If you sign a joint venture then two or more labels can sign you as a solo artist. 50 Cent is signed to Aftermath and Shady in this kind of deal. Also, you can be signed to one label as a solo artist and another label as part of a group. Jeezy had a solo deal with Def Jam and a group deal with Bad Boy as part of Boyz N The Hood.

The record company will have you sign a contract with them. Anyone, of any age, who is mentally competent, may sign a contract. However, if you are under the age of 18, you may elect to break most contracts. The idea of a contract is to lock you into a commitment with that record label. If you can elect to break the contract at any time, you are not locked in. People over the age of 18, cannot elect go get out of the contract. So for minors, people under the age of 18, the record company will require your parents to sign on your behalf. Of course, record company does not have to involve your parents and can have you sign. there are no age restrictions. if you are under 18 you'll probably have to have parential signatures on the contract as well. there are hundreds of thousands of people that are trying to be rappers and aren't minors. everyone thinks they are going to get signed, most wont.
