Is Charles Owen A Good Helmet

New Charles Owen helmet tight?

Hello!

So I bought a new Charles Owen Helmet ARY8 a few days ago, worn it maybe 3 times still assessing the fit. It is quite tight (not so bad it gives me a headache so far) and I know they mold to fit your head and need to be tight for safety. (I did the test where it moves your eyebrows if you move the helmet and it does so. I was also fitted at the store.)

My helmet gives me a bright red stripe on my forehead after wearing it for 10 min and up though. Is that normal and should it calm down with time as the helmet adjusts itself and compresses, or is it really too small? The next size up was too large and moved around easily.

Just checking as they are expensive and I'm waiting to cut the tags until I know it fits. (Have not worn it riding yet.)

It is a lovely helmet though and seems comfortable, I am wearing now for longer to see if I get head pain.

Thanks!

Should I get a TIPPERARY or CHARLES OWEN JR8 helmet? Please help!?

depends on what you use it for.

If you are jumping, and especially if you are doing cross country, I would go with the Charles Owen. It has titanium and is designed to help protect your head in the case of a fall where the horse may land on you. Awful thought. It is more accepted in the hunter ring strictly from a looks standpoint.

The Tipperary (what I use) is still ASTM-SEI approved, but it doesn't have the additional crush resistance of the CO. Kind of the difference between work boots and steel toed work boots =) I ride dressage, and the type of helmet is not counted for/against you, and when I show I put a velvet cover over it so the shiny-ness of the thing isn't distracting to the eye. I love the lightness and find it very comfortable.

If you are trail riding, doing dressage, or just schooling at low speeds, in an arena and not jumping higher than 3 ft, the Tipperary is fine. If you are working at speed, on possibly slick ground, or jumping over 3 feet or in competition, the Charles Owen is the better choice.

Charles Owen or Troxel?

The above is the helmet I would want for competing in. I am a TROXEL nut here too.

IRH or Charles Owen helmet?

My current helmet is a hand-me-down IRH, so I'm not sure the model it is but it's pretty much a plain velvet w/ the classic bow in back. However, it has gotten small on me so that it now just sits on my head, providing no protection whatsoever. I'm now contemplating whether to get another IRH or a Charles Owen. On Dover, it seems to that the Charles Owen helmets are more popular, however the reviews for the IRH get better with the price (go figure haha). I don't want to go over $200 and am trying to stay under $150. Which one do you recommend?
Oh and also, I was going to get this Charles Owen

Just as clarification, I can use this helmet in primarily any show ring....right? I don't do any fancy showing but just to be sure. Thanks!

Charles Owen JR8( 20 characters)?

I just got a Charles Owen JR8 since I wanted to start showing hunter, and I couldn't show in my other old helmet that I don't even know what brand but it was really ugly.

This is a great helmet for showing. It is very common in the hunger ring, the Charles Owen JR8 and GR8. The only difference between JR8 and GR8 though, are the chin straps, the sizes, ( the JR in JR8 stands for junior, so sizes typically go smaller) and the price, GR8 is usually more expensive.

I have this helmet, and it is very comfortable. My old helmet made my head look really egg shaped and it had an adjustable back, so I could wear it for several years while I was growing. When I tried on the JR8, it was very comfortable. It is also great for putting long hair in. I have short hair and can barley tuck my hair under it, but my friends has long hair and has to tuck it over her head, then tuck it back some and over lap because it is so long, and her helmet fits well.

If you are going to get this helmet, make sure it fits well. The first couple times I wore it, the sides seem kind of tight, but that was because my old helmet was really wide. I got use to it eventually, and now it is very comfortable. Another good thing about it is it doesn't smell bad! After a long ride and a sweaty head, after you take your helmet off, although it maybe a little sweaty,it will not smell that way! Haha!

So if you are considering getting a Charles Owen JR8, first, make sure it fits! Also, if you can fit into sizes in both GR8 and JR8, I would suggest going with the JR8, because the price difference is pretty significant (depending on were you get it).

Hope I could help, and good luck with helmets!!

Can you use Charles Owen helmet cleaner on the outside of the helmet as well as the inside?

I bought Charles Owen helmet cleaner, only to get home and find out that you should use it on the inside of the helmet, not the outside. Is it ok to use on the outside? If not, does anyone know of any ways to clean the outside of a helmet at home? Oh, the helmet I want to clean is not velvet, it is the GPA suade-like material.

Will a Charles Owen helmet break in and become more comfortable?

I got my first Charles Owen helmet ( JR8 ) after much trial and error. There are no english tack shops around so I ordered online and had to send the helmet back twice, each time getting a bigger size. I've decided to stick with the third exchanged helmet, even though it squeezes my head a little. The tightness is enough to be noticeable with my hair down, and with my hair up in the helmet it is too tight. I prefer my hair tucked inside the helmet so I'm hoping the helmet will 'break in' and become more loose. Does anyone have this type of helmet and know if the the fit becomes more loose with wear?
And, if you were wondering, I did measure my head with my hair the way I'd wear it before I ordered. I even measured loosely and the helmet is still tight.

Charles Owen or One K?

I am looking for a new show helmet. I have been using my schooling helmet as a show helmet since i started showing last year. it is a Tipperary sportage and when i fell in November, it got scratched. I used it for about 5 shows after then 'cause I didn't have another helmet, but I have gotten better at riding since then and moved barns. I feel it is time I get a helmet for just showing so I will have one if I fall and break my schooling helmet.
The two helmets I am thinking about are the Charles Owen Jr8 and the One K defender suede helmet.

Once I begin showing again with my new barn, I will be showing either hunters or jumpers. Which one do you think is best? For both rings, for riding in general?

The jr8 is less than the 1k, so is the 1k a lot better and worth the price difference?

*Helmet and Half Chap Help*?

Charles Owen helmets are some of the highest quality helmets on the market. Most have the titanium shell which is what they make some parts of airplanes out of. It's lightweight and very strong, but unfortunately very expensive. The titanium shell protects you from the horse rolling on you. The ASTM/SEI ratings are on impact only, not crush force. If you're in the show ring and want a classic look, go with the Showjumper XP or the Rider or the Wellington Classic. If you want a more modernized look, go with the Wellington Professional.
As for half chaps, suede will be more durable, or at least more durable looking. It will take wear and tear well, while leather will obtain scratches, tears, etc. and have the appearance of falling apart. I've had my suede half chaps for four years and worn them at least three times a weak, and they've held up fine, apart for some tearing of the stitching that was easily sewn up. In my opinion, I would get the suede, and Ariat is a very good brand, although I'm not sure if their chaps retail in suede. Any suede half chaps you get will be durable if you know the brand is good. Mine are Devon-Aire. Hope this helps, GL!

Whats the difference between the charles owen GR8 and JR8? Opinions/reviews?

The only visible difference I see in the JR8 from the GR8 is the strap. On the JR8, the strap is nylon with a clip, while the GR8 is a different material and it snaps. I'm not sure why the pricing varies so much because of the strap, but maybe that's not the only difference? ^

Also, I've heard that the "J" in the JR8 stands for junior and comes in smaller sizes but I'm not sure. Either way, they're both great helmets. I've heard nothing but great things from the helmet (other than the fact that they only fit a specific type of head shape). I think they're really comfortable helmets and unlike my old GPA, it doesn't give me headaches because it's so tight whenever I put my hair up in it.
