An employment certification is a document certifying that you are currently employed or working in a company. This certification is issued by that company and include the date of your employment, your job specification and the amount of remuneration. Ex: CERTIFICATE OF EMPLOYMENT This is to certify that so and so is in our employment as (job description) since (date of employment) with a salary of (amount). This certification is issued for whatever legal purpose it may serve him/her.

Their intent is not to keep it, or invade your privacy. Get with the program. The law requires that they actually see it for legal reasons. The same documents will be required of you to obtain a US passport, drivers' license and marriage license. If yours is a reputable employer, they'll want to be compliant with the law. The employer is complying with Federal Law that was enacted in the 1980s, to protect employers from penalties (since employers can be fined up to $10,000 per person if convicted of hiring illegal aliens). Stop whining, you only have to bring it in once (the day you start a new job). Balking at this, reveals that you've never worked for an employer that obeys the employment laws.
