Is Engineering Right For Me

What engineering field is right for me?

Oi. I hate to see questions like this. Please don't listen to any of us morons when it comes to picking your major. I went to college for engineering and I will tell you how I picked my major and that's all I can tell you.

I went in as just an undeclared engineer. For the first year or so, it doesn't matter b/c you will take all the same core classes for any engineering major: physics, calculus, a couple of english classes, some gen eds. I took me to til the summer after my sophomore year to declare mechanical. I put it off for a while but I still graduated in 4 years without taking too many credits at once.

I picked mechanical b/c I think it has the most job options. I learned all the core engineering principles, then I could pick from a huge collection of technical electives to tailor it to what I wanted. I've known students that wanted to work with planes but instead of going into aerospace engineering, did mechanical engineering with all their tech electives in the aero department. They're now better rounded engineers and they can still compete strongly for aerospace jobs.

As far as math goes, any engineering major will require at least 2 semesters of calculus. And any of the engineering majors will have job opportunities in either an office setting or out in the field, or even a mixture of both. It will depend on those techical electives you choose to focus on.

And once you decide and get into college, don't be afraid to switch. People do it all the time.

Best of luck.

Majoring in engineering?

Can anyone help me decide what type of engineering is right for me by giving me a brief explanation about what each type is about and how rigorous each one is? Thanks

Is Environmental Engineering Right for Me?

At first, it is good that you are thinking. Secondly- environmental engineering is two sides stick. You think you will design a good things-alternative energy sources, for example. Fine, but there are many things that humans don;t take into account- EVERYTHING IN and ON AND ABOVE THE MOTHER EARTH IS CONNECTED. If you disturb one part of the Earth, the others will respond, but HOW humans don't know yet until it will affect millions. Been Design-engineer for over 25 years, I understood, that need to be extremely careful with your invasions, also you never know that those who ordering you to design the subject will use it with different purpose. Most scientists are meaning the best, but their creations are often used against humans or other living things- can you cope with this? It is really tough to live with it. If you want to do environmental good things- go to the garden center- start planting the trees, bushes, try to give new life to the animals, birds and fish that are going to die- bring the life back to the desert, or buy your own land and do it here. One of our neighbors is collecting homeless animals and birds and she really cares about them- feeding them, giving them medications, washing and walking them. This kind of work does not require the highest Maths, but it require the highest level of consciousness and kindness. Psychology- do you really happy of solving people's problems? Can you separate your work from your private life? If both questions will be answered "Yes"- then start psychology. Once you start it- it will never lieve you- trust me- I am doing this all of my life, and now I am tired of it, but it is there... If you cannot make your mind yet, I would suggest- start from simple one and if you like it- became an expert in it.Good luck.
