Is Graphic Design The Correct Major If I Want To Be A Web Designer

Web or Graphic Design majors: Do regret it at all?

No, I don't regret my career choice although there are definite doubts that occur, especially right out of college when finding a job can be really difficult.

College was super expensive and I'm pretty sure I'll be paying my student loans back for the rest of my life, but my education was worth it. I learned a lot and met a lot of great fellow designers and had great teachers.

You'll probably find higher paying jobs in the big cities simply because the cost of living will be higher. Also, a lot of well known companies are in bigger cities like New York or San Francisco, but there are plenty of design firms doing great work in smaller cities throughout the U.S.

The level of difficulty in finding a job is not concentrated in one city. The design field, like many other fields, is very competitive. More and more people are graduating with a degree in design and there simply aren't enough jobs to go around. You'll have a better chance of landing an interview if you do get your degree, but doesn't guarantee a job. What it really comes down to is your portfolio. If you have good work and it stands out from the competition then you're on the right track.

I don't know if having a double major in digital arts and IT is a good thing. I guess it depends on what you plan on doing as a career. It's always good to have more knowledge in different areas, but whether or not that will come in handy really depends on the job at hand.

Good luck!

How is graphic design different from web design?

Web design VS. Graphic design, the two terms look like an irrelevant group, indeed the confusion often occurs between them. Generally, the layman always calls web designers and graphic designers as “art designer”. Because all their work are misunderstood by the involvement of art skill and creative ability. Besides, they must be familiar with some essential design tools, and they can do the jobs related to web design or graphic design. Web Design vs. Graphic Design, What’s the Difference?Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design; interface design; authoring, including standardized code and proprietary software; user experience design; and search engine optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover them all.Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving using one or more of typography, photography, and illustration. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used synonymously. What’s the role difference between web designer vs. graphic designer?Web designer:1. See the art as a way to leverage technology2. Have a mutual interaction with their audience3. More technical (i.e., coding and programming)4. Employ an engineering approach to their designs5. What opportunities do I have as a Graphic Design Major?

ive recently become very intrigued with graphic design, im taking a graphics class in school. ive decided i want to major in graphic design, but theres one problem, my grandmother. she insists that i either will not be able to find a job in such a field or i will become bored with it within a few years. my graphics teacher told me that graphic design is an enormously growing field right now and i should have no trouble finding a career in it, yet my grandmother still thinks otherwise. she thinks that i should double major and do graphic design as a side job even though thats not what i want to do, i want to actually have a main job as a graphic designer. so i guess what im asking is for any insight that anyone has on the field of graphic design, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Graphic Design Degree?

Illustration is often taught as a specialisation for the second and third years of a three year degree course, the first year being a general introduction into graphic design.

Anon’s point, although discouraging, is not entirely inaccurate – many people are turned out of degree courses every year, many of them never work in the design industry. And there is an attitude among some previously potential clients that possession of some software and a video tutorial on Youtube is enough to design their project themselves.

You do need to be absolutely on top of your game to stay ahead of the pack. If you can learn about production processes and typography – these will set you apart from many of your competitors.

Should I major in graphic design or psychology?

It depends on what you like. For instance, if you think about the salary choice, then you might think Psychology. However, while you can get a Career in similar fields, you can’t became a fully fledged psychologist without a doctoral degree. In total you’ll be studying for about 8 to 10 years before you start earning money directly from the psychology field.Graphic Design is flexible and doesn’t necessarily require a degree though it helps allot. You can also move unto other fields in Graphic Design as it is a very diverse job and usually leads individuals into web development, advertising, creative directing etc. But, my personal rule is “When all fails, Do What you Love”. So whichever one you like the most, go for it, and make sure you strive to be the best at it (even though that’s wishful thinking).

Can I become a graphic designer, web designer and web developer?

A Web designer:Focuses on look and feel of a websiteUses HTML, CSS, and JavaScriptIs competent in color scheming, graphic design, and information flowCreates a great user experienceIs right-brained: Strong intuition, creativity, & imaginationPortfolio is worth more than a degreeA Web developer:Creates the inner workings of a websiteIs competent in programming languages (PHP, .NET, Python, C, Ruby)Develops the user interfaceIs left-brained: logic, linear thinking, technicalHands-on coding experience is required (either your own products or GitHub)

Should the web designer provide the graphics or is it the graphic designer's job?

Thanks for the A2AThe definition of the words "work of art" is open to interpretation so I will say it all depends on the purpose of the art. There are some websites that are graphics intensive and require both a web developer and a graphics designer. Most of the time,  websites that are meant to showcase the work of a designer employ the use of motion graphics and illustrations to make the pages interactive and attractive. On the other hand,  websites for organizations and other companies need to favor simplicity to allow the user, to navigate easily and receive the necessary information as quickly as possible while at the same time being pleasing to the eye. Both types of sites have their advantages, but the second type is most likely going to be designed by the web designer instead of the generic graphics designer.

How can I choose graphic or web designing for best career?

Hello! I am a freelance Graphic, Motion, UX Designer. Also I am a front end developer. This depends on what platforms you are comfortable working with.As a graphic designer, you will be mainly creating graphics/creatives for the digital/web or print purposes. As a web designer, you will be designing web apps or sites which will ultimately be hosted on the internet.Graphics program like Adobe or Corel are required in both the cases. In web design, you will be creating mockups of your site in Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/Sketch but ultimately you will have to design the site on the web using code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Javascript is mainly to add functionality and make your site interactive. So you will be using Adobe or Corel or some other graphics program in both the cases. But just knowing how to design a website in Adobe Photoshop may not be enough since your clients will prefer web designers who can design, code as well as host the site for them. So you will have to learn about front-end development thoroughly and know a bit about back-end as well. So, wrapping up:Graphic Designing - You use softwares/applications to designWeb Designing - You use code to design after you have created your mockups using softwares/applications.There are many tutorials that can help you learn Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch etc. You can also take free courses for both on Udemy. Both fields are highly rewarding provided you are well skilled!
