How can I prepare for the GATE exam through self study if I am from a civil branch?

Answer Requested.There are many strategies that you can get from around the web by how they nailed it giving 3-4 hours/day for 6-7 months. My answer will definitely help you in landing in 70+ marks/Top 100 club. Here it is :-1. If you have enough time( > 1 year) , start from basics read everything from standard books but do make notes of whatever you read in a separate notebook. If you have time constraint (<1 year ) , just rush through the books or coaching notes and develop a basic idea of each chapter.2. Solve "gate previous year questions" book (by made easy preferably as it is "almost" error free and have questions from year 1991 onward) of each chapter as soon as you finish chapter from book/notes.Even if you are not getting the question and answer initially just learn it,you will definitely understand it with more practice later on.For newly added subjects you may refer to previous year questions of IES.3. Mere learning previous year questions will fetch you 35-40 marks.4. Make a formula notebook and note all formulas of your course in it (approx 2000-2500 formulas) revise it periodically.When 2 months left for gate, revise it daily. this will land you in 55-60 marks zone coupled with above mentioned steps.5. All above 4 steps should be executed together in a parallel manner.6. In last 1-1.5 month, leave everything going in this world which is not related to gate,make books/notes your sleeping partner, breakfast partner , dinner partner.Remember in order to achieve exceptional things you have to work hard exceptionally.7. Join a good test series, give 5-10 mocks at interval of 5 days each and try to beat your current score. During this phase you will get insight of where you are lacking and where you need to work upon. This will work like an injection of confidence in you. Make a fresh notebook and keep a record of mistakes done in all the test series you have attempted.8. In last few days, revise only your short notes + formula notebook + mistake of mocks as many times as possible.Follow these steps and believe me, no power in the world can stop you from achieving 70+ marks/Top 100 rank.Hope it helps :)Do look at my other answers which I have arranged in my profile related to GATE and ESE preparation. Can I prepare for GATE alone without any group study?

In a survey, about 68% students said that they got IITs by self preparation and remaining through coaching and test series.​You made a point that you have made easy classroom notes which are best for Gate/IES.Mean you have classroom study materials and books, if not then get standard books for more conceps because sometimes books helps more than notes.Group is needed to understand the concepts and discussion, and you already done this.In alone mode you have extra time and get time for preparation than who enrolled in coaching,they spend 4-6 hours in coaching and make 10 hours for self preparation. You are ahead of them.The most important thing is that you don't need work hard ,you need to work smarter. You need to study 2 subjects at a time and your time table regularly.Join the test series in October- November of Made easy and ace both.Complete your whole syllabus by the end of October and rest three months for revision regularly along with test series.The most important thing is Keep motivated yourself and believe in yourself(you have greatest in you) Forget about alone aur group ,you have also some advantage in alone.Try to regularly time management for study. Which one is better for preparing for GATE exams: distance learning or regular coaching?

Well this question of distance learning program or regular classroom course is purely a subjective question , you should understand by your present status what will be best for you.
