Is Iowa A Good Place To Move To With Kids

How is Des Moines, Iowa as a place to live?

Des Moines is a "Big Small Town". That is the best way to describe it. Without writing too much, I will try to describe Des Moines in words. People are friendly. Low cost of living. There are a dozen or so great restaurants. The Iowa State Fair (in August) is awesome for many reasons. No traffic. No lines. Not much live music (boo). There are some cool bars downtown. Spring is nice. Summer is nice. Fall is nice. Winter sucks. Lots of bike trails. Safe. Clean. There is a certain midwest mentality. If you have friends here, there are fun things to do. If you don't know anyone, you will make friends easy if you try. I have lived here 38 years. Besides dreading winter, I have fun with friends but often wish that there was more to do. The night life has kind of a "weekend warrior" feel. If you like to go out on school nights, you will find the bars pretty slow. I like dive bars, so it works for me. If I see you out, I'll buy you a beer :)

Should I live outside Iowa City if i want to avoid the partying and loudness. If possible, what are the best areas in Iowa City to live? In the newspapers it says houses for rent in NW Iowa City. Which region is the best?

Is Des Moines, IA a good place to live?

Des Moines is a different kind of town and it a great place to live for people who value a quiet, stable life. It is not such a hot place to live for people who like excitement.

I’ve lived in or near Des Moines most my life, having left for a few years after college where I had the opportunity to travel much more broadly. I came back to raise my family, which seems to be the common vein of thought among people who enjoy living here. Des Moines is in the middle of America, as such – there’s not a lot for single people to do. We don’t get many good bands, we have no pro sports teams, our beaches are less than stellar and the nearest mountains are a 12 hour drive. Our summers are blisteringly hot and almost Georgia humid, and our winters are viciously cold and almost Anchorage dry, Des Moines suffers from one of the widest swings between summer high temp and winter low temp of any major city.

But for independent or married folks with kids who don’t care about those things (and own good furnaces and air conditioners), Des Moines has a lot to offer. The suburbs have some of the top public schools in the USA. The people share a can-do attitude and suffer from chronic niceness, everybody around here is nice. Crime is some of the lowest in the country, and the upside of not having anything tourists want to see – is that we don’t deal with many tourist drivers. So Des Moines has the lowest car insurance and accident rate of the largest 100 cities in the US. The food is pretty good, lowest priced and highest quality red meat in the USA, which is why Iowa is only the 22nd healthiest state – we tend to eat a lot of that meat. Iowa is also the worlds breadbasket - only the Ukraine can rival Iowa for having the best growing season and most productive farmland and Des Moines is smack in the middle of all that land. So a lot of us garden, or cook, or wood work, or read, or have lots of other hobbies we can do as a home-body.

The way I explained it to one friend, “Des Moines is like living in The Shire, from the Lord of the Rings. It’s quiet, calm and peaceful where nothing much ever happens. And the people here like it that way.”

What restaurants in Iowa City, IA are good for kids?

Bluebird Diner on E. Market St. is fun for kids. They give out coloring pages (of birds) and display them in the restaurant.Z'Mariks has kid-friendly food. Kids may also enjoy The Wedge/May's Café downtown: great pizza and ice cream and a location right next to the playground and the public library *and* the fountain.

How is Iowa? Is it a good state to live in?

Dependent on what you consider good. It’s not the big city. It’s not the place for people who like a lot of concerts. It’s not for those who want to attend NFL games. It’s a quieter life. It’s a slower life. The “instant gratification” you get in larger cities will never be found in even the largest places, like Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City. But if you like the idea of spending the weekend watching the stars, movies, or going fishing and/or hunting, it is definitely your heaven.

Is Alabama a good place to live?

Depends on where exactly you go. But yes the people are generally nice. Beautiful landscapes. As far as jobs go I think we are below the national average in terms of unemployment, but move to the bigger cities (Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery) to find work.

And despite the stereotypes Alabama is not a backwards place.

Should my husband and I move to Des Moines, Iowa?

I'm from Texas and my husband is from Denmark. We live in Denmark now, but I want so badly to move back to the states. There's a big chance he might be able to stay with the company he is with now and move to Des Moines. Do you think it would be an okay place to live, or should we just move back to East Texas? All opinions are valued!
