Is It Normal To Have Red Swollen Arm 5 Days After Tdap Shot

I got a tetanus shot and it is hot to the touch, red, sore, and swollen. Is this normal?

YES, as with any intramuscular medication, there is a chance that the medication can cause muscle soreness, redness and some minor swelling. You might want to apply ice to the site to reduce swelling and soreness. Actually you should have done that the first 24 hours and then apply a warm - not hot heating pad. As with any injury, don't overly exercise it.

Swelling and soreness with a tetanus shot?

Occasionally, some people will notice pain and swelling at the site of an immunization. This is nothing to be overly concerned about. Applying a moist warm cloth to the site and taking some ibuprofen or tylenol should be all you need to do. If you take a wet wash cloth and place it in the microwave for about 45-60 seconds, make sure it is not so hot that it will burn you, and apply it to the area 3-4 times a day for the next day or so. This will increase blood flow to the area and aid in healing plus provide comfort. I don't know your age or weight, but assuming you are an adult, you can take 2 tylenol or 2 of the over the counter ibuprofen for the pain. Should you notice redness that is increasing in diameter around the site, streaks going away from the site or yellow or green drainage from the site, you should seek immediate medical attention. Soreness with movement after a tetanus shot is not at all uncommon. Most nurses give the tetanus vaccine in the non dominant arm for this very reason. Hope you feel better.

Is it normal for the site of a tetanus shot to get more painful, bruised, and red days after the shot?

I had a tetanus shot three days ago. The first night, it wasn't sore at all. the next day, it started to bruise a little, but wasn't bad. Yesterday, there was a 1 inch bruise around it, and today, the bruise is darker and more painful, and there is a large red oval area under it. The whole area is swollen, tender, and hard. Is this normal?

Why does the arm get sore after a tetanus shot?

Others have mentioned reactions and inflammation, but I wonder if part of it may also sometimes be the way the shot is given. I know that Novocaine shots always felt quite painful before I found my current dentist (35 years ago!) I asked him about this at one point after complimenting him on the amazingly painless shots he gave.In response he pointed the needle over toward the sink several feet away and briefly pushed down on the plunger. The liquid arced through the air and splashed against the back of the sink. He then looked at me and said, “Now if I tried to give you the shot quickly by pushing the plunger that hard, imagine what it would do to all the tissue that stream would be hitting!”His “secret method” seemed to lie in simply taking an extra couple of seconds to squeeze the shot in slowly.I have also found this to be the case with a particular shot giver at a local Rite-Aid, a wonderful gal named Annie who gives the most incredibly painless shots for flu, shingles, and AND tetanus!MJM, who was NOT liked by doctors as a child due to the earsplitting high-pitched screams emitted during shot administrations…
