Is It Too Late To Start A Dancing Career

I'm 19, is it too late for me to start a career in dancing?

well, if you want it to just further your acting career, then you could take dance classes in whatever genre preferred for the fundamental background. but if you really want to start dancing, i say hey take all the classes you want and work very hard if you want to go anywhere. the reality of it is that yes it may be a late start, but lets not look at it that way, lets look at this in a positive light. i think if you truly are commited to dancing then you can take the classes for a couple of years and then start with local compititions and things like that...but dont stop taking classes; and take a lot of classes as often as you can. good luck and have fun as much as you can with this without being flimsy in your technique and i wish you all the best in the world. happy dancing!

Is 19 too late to start dancing?

You are definitely NOT too old to start! I started taking ballet classes as an adult with no training. I am of the opinion that my age has helped me to better understand the concepts, allowing me to better focus on technique. Also, because I am an adult I do not feel the pressure that many younger dancers with professional career aspirations have and can simply enjoy the art of dancing.

If you live near an urban area, there are usually studios that offer beginning adult ballet classes (google is great for finding places!). Some community colleges and universities also offer beginner courses (both my former community college and current university offer beginning ballet, jazz, tap, and modern classes). Although I would encourage you to be picky and research about the studio you are interested in to find out about their fees, instructors, performances, dress code, class size etc. If there is a professional company near you, check out their website or contact the studio, many of them also offer beginner classes for adults only. Taking classes through a professional company are usually very good quality- both from a technical and safety standpoint.

In my experience most adult classes are offered in the evenings or on weekends. Some places use an open class schedule where you purchase classes on a punch card (or similar system) that expires in one year, enabling you to only pay for the classes you attend.

Best of luck in finding a dance class... hope I was able to help!

Is it too late to start dancing at 18?

No.I started dancing at age 16, and got pretty successful early on (got invited to perform for school talent show).Later, I realised that performance that I gave was absolute shit. I then worked very hard to refine my moves. A typical dance session is filming down my dance, critiquing it while resting, and filming down the next dance, and critique it until I get too tired. You have everything going for you man. You can access hundreds of thousands of great dancers on YouTube such as Michael Jackson, Lee Taemin, Nonstop dubstep, slow down the video (a function on YouTube) to 0.5, and obsessively study them. I believe you have a smartphone, use it to film your own dance and critique your own dance. All these are accessible to you today for a very low cost. You have youth going for you (18 is not at all old).Imagine dancers from 30 years ago. Video cameras were expensive. Video streaming was non existent. Learning to dance was much harder then.Good luck dancing! Anymore questions related to dance you can always pm me.

Is it to late to start dancing at 16?

As a career it will be hard and nearly impossible. Sure there are a few exceptions of girls who have started ballet and who have made it into a big company, but those girls are exceptions, they are unique and they are talented.

Is your sister talented? Ask her to 'try' to dance infront of you and tell her the truth. It's better to hurt her ego now then later in life, because at 16 she probably with no former practice she won't be able to go far. At the best maybe she will get into a small ballet company's corps de ballet.

But it isn't fully impossible. My aunt's friend started ballet when she was 18, and now she teaches it to teenagers.

I'm 25, is it too late to start dancing again?

Thanks again for all the answers. Coming from a professional (referring to the longest answer under this post) I understand that it might not be possible to be a pro anymore, BUT that will not stop me from getting as far as I can because that is what makes me happy and will keep me happy in the end. I have enough determination, and who cares if it's in a local theatre in who knows where, I will be happy because in the end it's what I love to do. There are so many other people out there who have awkward figures, some even overweight, but they still persevere. I'm not even either of those things.
I appreciate all these answers, but I will say that when I mentioned emotion in contemporary dance I did not say in any way that it is the sole aspect of this type of dance.
To the last answer on here, I can still do the split, which is a relief! :) I should have got stiffer by now but I haven't..I'm willing to bet it's because I haven't stopped dancing/exercising (at least as much as I have be

Is 16 years old too late to start dancing ?

Recreational dance is for anyone of any age, shape or ability. The only thing you are too old for is a professional dance career. But most who start at age 7/8 when real training can begin also never reach the professional ranks. There are so few jobs in dance and many talented well trained dancers ready to take those jobs. Besides dance careers are over in a flash and then dancers need to find a second career for the remainder which is the bulk of their life.
There is no reason you can’t do this. Find a teen or adult beginner class and get started. Stay away from competition dance schools. They don’t teach proper form but emphasize tricks instead.

Is it too late to start learning to dance at 20 years of age?

NO , a roaring NO!!!What do you do when you wish to show your joy/sadness/anger/idea and you can’t sing/write/paint ; but you can move your body in graceful ways and can catch attention of people. Dance is a medium to get attention. But are dancers dancing only to become center of attention? Answer is what Germans call ‘Yaein’ = “Ya”+”Nein”; a yes and a no. Yes, dancers like being applauded for their work, but they like it more when their audience feel something. Dance is another medium to make people feel - like music, poetry, movies, painting… and the countless other stuffs that people do. So age is not a limitation to learn dancing.Your best bet would be to join a dance school and then go to their classes religiously. Practice at home, do the homework that the trainer tells you. You would be uncomfortable in the beginning classes, but if you stick on, results will happen.I have seen a friend of mine going from a 0 to a 6 in dancing by joining a dance school. Of course his interest in learning dance was paramount and dance he did in a miraculous span of 2 months. Do not underestimate the power of training.

Am I too old to start dancing?

Hi! I'm so sorry to hear that you couldn't afford to do what you wanted. But, there is time!!! You can do whatever you want, including being a professional ballerina :) I started ballet 3 years ag, I just worked very hard and pushed myself a lot, and I got my pointe shoes 3 months ago!! You can be whatever you want to be!! Join ballet classes and reach for the stars!! My dream for when I'm older is to dance at a professional dance theatre ( the south african ballet theatre) and I know I can make it, because I believe in myself. As for your. Other questions, a dancers career can end at any age up to ±40, but remember, dance style can be a huge factor too!! And, if you get too old, you can still study dancing now, and open up your own studio and teach til the day you're 90!!! Haha* but really if I were you, I'd reach for my dreams, and go and join a excellent ballet school!! You'll never know unless you try!! :) good luck!! And by the way, I know of someone in a very similar situation, and she's reaching for her dreams right now ;)
