Is My Ankle Stiff Or Still Fractured

Did i break or sprain my ankle?

so today at my soccer practice i was running and my ankle gave in and the weight of my body landed right on it. this is my ankle almost 4 hours later after usng the R.I.C.E method and trying to minimaze the weight i put on it. my ankle is swollen, bruised, and very very stiff. also when i fell i heard a loud cracking noise which concerned me. i have severlely sprained my ankle in the past whicch have put me in a boot and using crutches but this time has been far more painful and with the noise and all i need peoples opinions. is it a sprain or a break?

Will a fractured ankle heal on its own?

Yes for the post part. However if this is either bimalleolar or trimalleolar then you more likely than not will require surgery since these type of fractures usually have a displacement component to them. even in a simple fracture such as a distal fibula this still requires some form of immobilization in order for the fracture segment to heal appropriately. If you do not follow your orthopedic doctors advice, and let your ankle fracture heal on its own, you will inevitably develop some osteoarthritis in and around the ankle joint which over time could get worse and become quite painful, stiff and even at worst debilitating. Therefore you should never ignore a fracture especially of the ankle joint or be prepared for the consequences. Good luck.

Accidents and Injuries: I twisted my ankle. Is it ankle sprain or fracture?

I am 64. I had a series of bad ankle sprains when I was a teenager such that I just treated them myself. Once my mother made me go to the doctor. He took an x-ray and told me how nice the fracture had healed. I was left with a sort of weak ankle, a strong wobble when I tried to wear those tall spike heels but not chronic pain. That said, my career has been in work accidents and in many cases a severe sprain can cause more long term problems than a simple fracture.Much of the treatment may be the same but sometimes more is needed to avert  disability for both a fracture and a sprain.Go get an x-ray and try not to laugh while you think of a  nice 64 year old lady on 5 1/2 inch spike heels wobbling around like Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot.

I broke my ankle and refused surgery on it?

Why did you refuse surgery? Insurance? Afraid?

Like it was already stated, if its because of insurance, the hospital will have to work with you because this is a "needed" surgery, not a "wanted" surgery. The longer you wait, the worse your ankle will heal.

You need your ankles to walk...reconsider before its too late. You will develop and have constant pain. You will develop arthritis. You will always have severe difficulty walking. You will probably walk stiff like a robot, because you will lose the ability to move your ankle and be very, very stiff and limited in your ankle range of motion.

Because you have now changed the way you walk(this is your future continued) because of your stiff, painful & arthritic ankle, you now are having knee, hip & back pain. Do you see your future without surgery and PT after surgery?

Good luck & I hope you are able to have surgery and please, please follow-up with physical therapy after your cast comes off.

I sprained my ankle and it has been months but it still hurts when it's in some positions, what can I do?

Sprains take a lot longer to heal than breaks do, because there is poor blood supply to tendons and ligaments which are what is damaged in a sprain. It can take over a year to heal fully. You can check with your doctor and see if you should be splinting it or having physical therapy for it.

Is it normal that my ankle still hurts after 8 months of a 2nd degree sprain?

Approximately 30% of people still have ankle pain 1 year after an ankle sprain[1] . That is not a necessary result, but one that increases in likelihood if you rely on rest, ice and just waiting it out.Sprained ankles simply do not heal on their own. You need to actively follow a good ankle rehab program, which includes removing swelling and improving healthy circulation to bring much needed immune cells into the injured area to repair muscle tissue. And then, you need to do a variety of well thought out exercises and stretches to rebuild strength, stability and range of motion in the ankle.I recommend the H.E.M. Ankle Rehab System (which you can follow along with step by step videos and do entirely at home) or go see a qualified physical therapist. Either way, please take an active role in healing your ankle or it simply will not get better.I realize that you have an older injury, but rehab is definitely the way to go. Just take it slowly and gently as you go through the steps, to see how your ankle responds. Work through breaking up the scar tissue and slowly building up strength, stability and healthy range of motion and you should start to see excellent healing resuts.I hope that helps!Footnotes[1] http://Margo KL (12/08). Physical therapy excercises for ankle after open reduction repair of fracture?

Karen, here is the problem. You don't state what was fractured and what was done in the open reduction. The open reduction is associated with hardware being placed in the ankle but where and what is important. The ankle is most likely stiff and still at least somewhat swollen and that will require some work. All that I can give to you is some very generic exercises without specific information. Always start the exercises on your good side and not the injured as the results will be significantly better when done this way. Sit in a straight chair and roll the outer edge of the good foot out as far as possible and as hard as possible for 30 seconds and then rest it for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the injured foot the same way 3 times. Next starting with the good foot roll the inner edge of the foot in and up as much as possible for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the same movements on the injured foot exactly the same way 3 times. From a long sitting position using the good ankle have the muscles of the foot pull the front of the foot up towards the shin as hard as you can for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. The only movement that occurs here is at the ankle and you will know that it is working as there will be a pulling in the calf. Repeat this twice more and then do the injured ankle exactly the same way 3 times. Lastly, starting with the good foot have the front of the foot push down as hard as possible for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the same movements on the injured foot exactly the same way 3 times. You should also be doing proprioceptive exercises but these should be done with professional supervision until you have the hang of them. The movements given to you should be done at least twice a day and realistically more than that to improve function as quickly as possible.

How do i know if ive broken my ankle or just sprained it?

Go back and get another xray.
When my dad was like 20 he broke his ankle but he thought he sprained it so he didn't go to a doctor. It healed up eventually but not properly. 30 years later he was still having problems with it and finally went to have it looked at. They told him it had been broken all those years ago. He had to have it fused and since then he can't bend his foot or move his leg really at all from the knee down. He's 80 now and still having problems.

You should definitely go back to be sure its okay. Better safe than sorry.

I sprained my ankle badly 9 months ago. I still have pain, some swelling, and lots of weakness and giving out despite daily rehabilitation exercises. What should I do?

Oh, my.Sprains can be a lot worse than many of us believe. If I were in your shoes (I myself am just starting to walk after an ankle fracture 11 months ago, followed by two sprains), first I would have another check with the doctor. Then, I would reevaluate my rehab. Am I moving too fast, putting too much pressure too fast on my ankle? Finally, I would keep resting, icing, and elevating that ankle.Just keep at it.Feel better.
