Is My Toe Fractured Or Sprained Should I Go To The Doctor

Is my toe sprained or is it fractured. I hit it on the door pretty hard?

When i hit my toe and foot on the side of the door with very steady pressure i didn't think much of it right away. Then the next day its really swollen. My pinky toe has a little dark purple line around a big purplish reddish circle. Is that where i broke it. The discoloration extends from the pinky toe to about 5 inches out. I can walk on my foot with steady limping. But even as i sit down i can feel a slight pain constantly but when not relaxed it hurts a bunch. What do i do. I want serious answer es please.

Sprained toe and PE?

Yesterday I fell down and my toe hurt SO BAD. I thought it was going to be a temporary pain where my toe would only hurt for like 5 minutes. Instead, it's been hurting for a day and my toe has turned completely purple on the front and back. I didn't go to the doctor and I'm guessing it's sprained because when I touch it it's very sensitive and I can't walk or stand properly. I have to stand on my heel for there to be no pain. Tomorrow at school I have to do PE. We walk and run first and then we're going to play basketball. Should I get a note from my parents or is a sprained toe no big deal? I'm hesitating to get a note because I feel like if I get excused from PE with a bruised toe I'm "overreacting." But I practiced running and I'm limping and yelping in pain. So I basically have 2 questions. Is my toe sprained? Should I be excused from PE?? Thank you for the answers :)

I Think my toe is sprained, but not sure?

Sounds like your toe is sprained, you shouldnt go to the doctor unless its still painful in 2 weeks.

Follow RICE as much as possible:

Treatment includes:

rest
Avoid using the injured toe.

ice
Apply ice or a cold pack to your toe for 15-20 minutes, 4 times a day for 2 to 3 days or until the pain goes away. Wrap the ice or cold pack in a towel. Do not apply the ice directly to your skin.

compression
If the injured toe is the big toe, wrap a 2-inch elastic compression bandage around it. Put several wraps around the big toe and then include the rest of the forefoot within the bandage. This will limit swelling of your big toe. Other toes cannot be effectively compressed with a bandage.

elevation
Keep the injured foot raised above the level of your heart for 48 hours (such as up on a pillow). This will help drain fluid and reduce swelling.

medication
Take one of the following drugs to help reduce inflammation and pain:
- ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
- naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)
- acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- aspirin

protection
Wear a shoe with a stiff sole to help protect the injured toe.

Hope your toe starts to feel better soon :)

Is my toe broken or sprained?

Okay, so i was playing with my friend last night, and we were kicking a stuffed animal around, when i kicked the floor instead of the animal. i had an INTENSE amount of pain in my big toe for about 10 minutes, and then i was at least able to get up off the floor. so i put ice on it afterward, and then went to sleep. i woke up in the morning, and it still hurt, even though i was just lying there in bed without pressure or moving it. i put more ice on it off and on all day, and i still cannot walk normally, and it hurts to put pressure on it or flex it very far. i am not sure if it is broken or not, but there isnt too much swelling (my friends dad said their would be more if i broke it), but what scares me is that i think i can hear a little crack when i move the toe side to side. my mother wont take me to the hospital, because the nurse on the phone said there isnt much they can do even if it is broken. so i am sitting here freaking out, wondering if its broken or not. im scared that if it is broken, if i keep moving it i will make it worse, and that when i walk (well, limp) it may hinder the healing. help me!!! tell me what i can do please?

How do I know if my toe is jammed, broken, or sprained?

Sounds like a sprain - but broken toes are hard to diagnose. If you go to the doctor, they can't really put a cast on or anything, but it's still a good idea to get it checked out if you're worried.

As for speeding recovery, use the RICE regimen:

Rest - stay off the toe as much as you can. Don't practice for a few days.

Ice - Use frozen veggies or an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel and apply it to the toe for no more than 10 minutes at a time several times a day.

Compression - Use an ACE bandage to wrap the toe(s). This and the ice will help to bring down swelling and heal you quicker.

Elevation - When you're just sitting around for the first few days of the injury, try to put your affected foot up. Above heart level is best if you can (this keeps the blood from flooding the area). You can also put books or bricks under the foot of your bed to elevate your feet while you sleep.

DON'T put heat on the sprain/break, and really do try to stay off it. The RICE regimen has worked for me many times, just try to stick to it. Good luck!

Can you go swimming with a broken toe and sprained ankle?

We're swimming in PE and I recently sprained my ankle and broke 2 toes on Friday. My doctor told me no extensive physical activity such as running, dancing, etc. (I tried going to dance class, but it was just too painful). Would I still be able to swim? I'll be having to kick in the water, so would it be a wise idea?

Should I go to the doctor for a broken toe? Why or why not?

It depends on the damage, the severity of pain and pretty much if you think it’s worth finding out that all is alright with your injury. I think I am. I rely on my feet and I want them in good shape.I broke my toe a few years ago. It was the most painful experience of my life. A heavy and thick piece of glass (the edge) landed on and shattered my big toe. There was blood and I went into shock. I’d never broken a bone in my life.I asked someone to get me a shoe that I could wear and I used crutches to go to work the next day. I took a few ibuprofen for the pain, but shrugged off that a hurt toe could be anything serious. After a couple of days, at the insistence of colleagues I went to a foot doctor. That is when I found out I had sustained fractures of two toes and missed a nerve, I forget what it is called, by a HAIR. And had I caused damaged to that nerve I would have needed surgery. It cost me about a hundred dollars to find out that I was okay. And it was worth the peace of mind. As far as the shattered bones….I just had to wait for them to heal. There is nothing they can do for broken toes except wrap them.
