Is Physical Therapy A Good Idea For My Dog

Is my epileptic dog a candidate for a total hip replacement surgery?

I would STRONGLY encourage you to talk with a Physical Therapist vet BEFORE you undergo surgery

1) at his age, this might be resolved with PT instead of surgery

2) PT will help make him stronger before surgery & correct any muscle-skeletal misalignment that has occurred as his body has tried to compensate

3) his epilepsy may or may not be produced by pinched nerves in his neck/spine -- only a PT can help if spinal misalignment is the cause

wobblers disease is only one example of a problem in the neck that can create seizure activity

4) there may be other issues that could cause him to die under anesthesia.... this needs to be checked out before surgery is considered

if I were in your shoes, I would get opinion from PT vet, general vet & ortho vet before making any firm decisions

My dog cant walk or stand. How can I get her to use the bathroom.?

I think she has coonhound paralysis and cant walk or stand. I made a sling to hold her up but she still wont go. She hasn't pooped in over 24 hours and only urinated a little yesterday afternoon. I really need her to use the bathroom so she doesn't get any other problems. Please help.

My dog is paralyzed from the waist down...?

Your vet should be able to tell you the best way to help him. However, I would suggest gently massaging and moving the muscles in that area. It should be obvious what he does and does not like.

I would also give him small doses of asprin twice a day if he seems to be in any pain. You can also try heat to help soothe the muscles and stimulate blood flow.

If he does nothing but rest, the muscles will be too weak for him to even have a chance anyway. You need to make sure they're still getting blood flow. If/when a person is temporarily paralyzed, massage and physical therapy is a big part of the healing process, and the same holds true for dogs. So ask your vet specifics, but start massaging. Good luck, I hope it all works out :)

Best way to put a dog with a gimpy leg to sleep humanely?

no joke, there is no reason the euthanize this animal. I had neighbors whos cat got stuck in a fox trap and she chewed off her own foot to get out. They had her leg amputated at the shoulder. That cat was the happiest, FASTEST cat I ever met!! Your dog may be in pain now, but pain is really easy to fix. Dogs and horses do not have the same physiology, and thusly their physical ailments should not be treated the same. This animal does not need to be put to sleep, he may not even need to have his leg amputated! He may just need a re-break or some physical therapy!

To me, it sounds like you have already decided that you want or need to get rid of this animal for whatever reason, so if that is the case, I reccomend getting him to a good no-kill shelter where he can be cared for. Often times the 3-leggers are adopted the fastest because they are cute as heck, they are resiliant animals and people LOVE them!

Dog with hind legs ataxia. please help...?

Talk to your vet about glucosomine for dogs, they will give you right dosage - specially formulated for dogs available @ your vet.

Also there is an injection consisting of shark cartilage called "Cartrophen Vet" prescribed and given by the vet that helps with rebuilding worn away cartilage in the spine/joints.

Open minded vets will have a physical therapist they recommend, they usually work out of emergency or acute care clinics by vet referral only. They work on loosening tight cramped muscles which also occur with arthritis, and exercises to strengthen muscles and balance.

My senior Dal/Lab cross had arthritis in his hips & spine and was on glucosomine, shark cartilage injections and we also when to physical therapy - worked wonders for him, he felt/acted like a younger stronger dog every time we left the PT's office.

Please bear in mind these suggestions may not be suitable for your dog's situation.

Always consult your vet before beginning any new treatments / supplements
