Dont get real pumpernickel confused with a soft spongy bread called pumpernickel, that usually has a bit of cocoa or dye in it to make it appear dark brown. Pumpernickel should be very hard, and comes sliced very thinly so that it's possible to chew.

Put a layer of Nutella (Hazelnut chocolate spread) on one slice. On the other slice, put a layer of peanut butter. Put the sandwich together and cut the crusts off. Now cut into 1/4’s. German (actually Westphalian) pumpernickel is made with coarse-ground rye flour, and rye is a particularly nutritive whole-grain.North American pumpernickel bread contains rye flour plus some wheat flour, which isn't quite as nutritious as rye, and either molasses or dark sugar syrup, and thus the North American version is not as healthy as the truly whole grain German pumpernickel.  [Edit/Addition:]North American pumpernickel is my favorite bread.
