Is Scratching Self Harm

Is scratching myself self-harm?

Ok so starting this year my self confidence has been really going down, and I pick on myself a lot. Like one day I think I'm too fat, the next day I think I'm too skinny. Now I'm starting to scratch and pinch myself really hard when I think of something stupid I said earlier or when I messed up or when I look back and think of how dumb I looked/how I look at the time. Then the those thoughts stay in my head, I can't let it go, it keeps popping up and I can't stop thinking about it. Then I scratch myself more(like on my upper legs and arms, and if I'm around people I put my hands on my hips and dig my nails into myself).

I just need to know if this is considered self-harm and if you think it could get worse.

Is scratching your face a form of self harm?

It sounds like a nervous habit gone bad. You really don't want to jump to the conclusion that she's inflicting self-harm on herself. If anything, keep watching her and the cuts - if new cuts shows up on a frequent basis, talk to her about it. Then, talk to her parents (if she is a minor), someone you trust, or a helpline for self-mutilators (which is better since they can help you help your friend if she needs it).

How do I care for self harm cuts and scratches?

clean them very frequently with water. when you are showering rub body wash on your skin directly above your cuts so that when the water washes over them the soap cleans them.use hydrogen peroxide too. you can buy this at any drug store such as CVS. make sure to use this when your cuts show any signs of infection (redness around them, swelling, extra pain) in order to eliminate this. make sure to dry your cuts completely after using hydrogen peroxide especially if you are then covering them with bandages.for the first days after you self harm always keep your cuts covered with bandages. put neosporin on the bandage so it’ll end up on your cut. once your cuts begin to heal, you can stop using bandages. if your cuts appear relatively wet, do not bandage. if they appear excessively dry, put a bandage with Neosporin on it to help.if your cuts are incredibly deep, go to the ER to get stitches. if that’s not possible, go to a drug store and buy butterfly stitches because that can help it not scar as badly.good luck :)

Is scratching your arm for the pain considered self-harm?

Yes, of course.Slapping your own face is considered self-harm as well. When you intentionally hurt yourself, then it means you do self-harm. Cutting is not the only type of self-harm.Types of Self-injury:Branding – burning self with a hot object.Friction burn – rubbing a pencil eraser on your skin.Picking at skin or re-opening wounds (dermatillomania) – an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pick at one’s own skin, often to the extent that damage is caused which relieves stress or is gratifying. Many compulsive skin picking causes are emotional or mental. Emotional trauma can lead to feelings of helplessness and insecurity. Does scratching yourself count as self-harm?

Yes, it does.

Self harm is just what it sounds like, and scratching purposely, even if it doesn't do much damage, is still harming yourself. Self harm includes cutting, burning, hair pulling and/or eating, picking (to pick at your skin or scabs), and hitting yourself. The only way I wouldn't consider what you do as self harm is it you only do it when you're scratching an itch, but you mentioned doing it on your arms and legs, which is a pattern among people who self harm. Ask yourself, do you do this to relieve stress? Does it make you feel calm? Do you do it to feel the pain, or maybe just the rush (that "high" feeling)? These are just some of the reasons people self-injure, and if any apply to you, I urge you start looking into ways to break that habit. Some "cutters" started out with scratching, then started cutting when it wasn't enough anymore. This may or may not happen to you, but it's still not something you want to get into. Whether its just scratching, or cutting, it will eventually become a mental addiction.

I started scratching in 6th grade. Two months later, i started cutting. It went from once a week or so, to not being able to go a couple hours without it. Now, I'm 18, and living with the scars. No, you aren't me.. but I've seen this behavior in others, and almost always leads down the same road. I just wish someone would have told me what I've told you before I got as bad as I did.

Be safe. I only wish you the best.
