The screen resolution is the main difference in tablets, as a high resolution screen cost a lot more than a non hd low resolution screen. You are paying for bigger RAM, processor, screen, quad core GPU and Air drop file sharing. The iPad Mini has a small issue, the RAM of 512MB isn't very good enough to handle the iOS 7 and apps without lagging, you will get lag spikes and the device becomes bit slow. So IMO its not worth getting the old version IF you have the money to buy the new one. Hope this helped!
