How do you tell if you have the stomach flu?

You know of course that “flu” or “influenza” in humans is a respiratory infection, which means that technically, there is no such condition as “stomach flu”.I suspect you mean any gastroenteritis for which there are more than 200 separate pathogens. One of the top four such pathogens is a virus - the norovirus - a small (27 nm) RNA virus that causes gastroenteritis after about 24–30 hrs incubation. Most people recover after 1–2 days, and deaths are very rare. Institutions such as hospitals, schools, and jails are frequently the host to such outbreaks, and cruise ships have learned that this is their most frequent infectious threat. Norovirus causes vomiting and diarrhoea, although in general, gastroenteritis can include any combination of the six common symptom nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, headache, or fever. More severe symptoms are sometimes seen with the less common types, and can include paralysis, septicemia, hemorrhagic diarrhoea, septic arthritis, memory loss, delusions, double vision, and death. Poliomyelitis and several other serious diseases begin as a gastroenteritis. So somewhere in there is the answer to your question.

Stomach flu or stomach virus?

its pretty much the same thing, after having it for three days u need to visit the doctor. lightheaded could be the start of dehydration. make sure u get plenty of liquids, and just stick with that until u think u can stomach foods, and try foods thats easy to diagest like toast. no sprite or fake gingerale, the sugars will make it worse, stick with water, gatorade or decaf tea! ive had the stomach flu the past week :( get well soon! ohh and get plenty of rest!

How do you treat a stomach flu?

Thank you for A2A. I'm glad you are feeling somewhat better at this time. Now that you're not vomiting, you can take acetominephin for pain. Are you sure this was the "flu"? If you continue to have a fever, seek Urgent Care or doctor's visit, not necessarily ER. It could be something else.Be careful what you put in your stomach. For issues of vomiting, the BRAT diet is recommended: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (plain). Also clear liquids are good, broth, jello, sherbet. For the future, keep over the counter anti-nausea med, Tylenol suppositories, a heating pad on hand. I hope you do not have a repeat of an illness of this type. Always be mindful of hand washing, as this is the way this type of flu is most often communicated.

Can you take a shower while having a stomach flu ?

yes for sure might make ya feel better too i know a shower always makes me feel better

Is 'stomach flu' contagious in the air?

It is very possible that another one of that family's children will come down with the stomach flu while on vacation and could pass it to your family. People are contagious for at least 3 days after their symptoms have stopped. Their feces will still contain viruses even when their symptoms have stopped. People should not go swimming for 2 weeks after they have had diarrhea. Make sure the other family understands that they may be contagious and washes their hands well. The stomach flu is usually not airborne except for aerosolized particles that fly out while someone is vomiting. Rotavirus can be in nasal secretions and therefore can be spread by coughing. Please read my website. http://www.stopthestomachflu.com for more information. If you feel comfortable, e-mail my website to the other family to make sure they know the stomach flu facts before the trip. Good luck.

What are some early signs of a stomach flu?

Stomach &/or belly cramps, nausea (feel like you're going to throw up), vomiting, diarrhea, foul-smelling stools may or may not be a symptom. You may run a fever & alternate between chills & feeling hot. You may be hungry but the thought of eating may make your symptoms worse. It may make you gag to think about food or drink. You should try to stay hydrated. Drink sips of room temperature water as cold water may start or worsen cramps. Try juices (you may find it easier to drink apple or pear juice & you may find it simpler to dilute the juice with water). Some people get relief from ginger so you can try gingerale... but make sure it's nearly flat. Coke syrup is kept behind the counter of most pharmacies. Put about an ounce (3 tablespoons) over crushed ice & sip slowly. Emetrol is a carbohydrate solution that might help. Pretzels are gentler on the stomach than soda crackers or saltines. Try those once the worst passes. You can rehydrate with Gatorade or if you prefer, Propel has a sugar free electrolyte drink, & there are other options. Only use those if you have a lot of vomiting &/or diarrhea. You can try jello, soft set (put about 1/4 cup extra water in a regular size package & 1/2 cup extra for the large). Popsicles, slushies, snowballs, anything to put fluids in your system. If it gets really bad to where you are weak & can't keep anything down, consider urgent care or the ER.

Stomach flu vs Food posioning?

My brother came over today saying he was so sick yesterday. He was puking and had diarrhea... which made me freak out because of the swine flu and all. As I tried to kick him out of the house, he kept saying it was food posioning, that his in-laws took him out to dinner, and he had chicken which could have been bad.

He said he was feeling great before he went to help his inlaws build a deck... then it was in the 70's yesterday so he was in the hot sun for most of the day.

Then he went to eat after taking a quick shower, and within an hour started feeling punky, then a bit after that started with diarrhea, then puking... so it had to be either food posioning, working in the heat, or both... because he was feeling great before and feeling good today.

(in fact he ate about 10 of the cookies my mom made, and a plate of casserole.) I didn't really care because I had the stomach flu once and it kind of came on suddenly. I felt ok most of the day, then started feeling light headed, then just got really sick... and I wasn't going through that again. it's been 9 years since I've puked and I want it to be 90 more years before I puke again!! so I basically kicked him out of the house and proceeded to use those Lysol wipes to sanitize places he had or may have touched. (I'm usually not that bad, but with this swine flu, with having OCD when it comes to puking, and the fact that I'm asthmatic and being sick is harder than normal on me... I freaked out.)

but that makes me wonder... how do you know if it's like a 24hr stomach bug vs. heatstroke vs. the stomach flu?
