Is traveling to India really as dangerous as everybody says?

I was thinking of going to India in the spring and so far everybody has been trying to talk me out of it. My grandmother told me straight out that I was going to die. I know there have been a few horror stories of kidnappings and such, but what is the real likely-hood of that happening to me? I intend on going with a secure organization with guides with me all the time.

I've done my research and I know that there are certain areas that you shouldn't go to, and I'm steering clear of them. I've done my research and I know that there are a few risks, but they seem to be mostly petty thieves and pickpockets, and I've been in areas where that stuff has been prevalent before.. I'm going to try and be smart and look a bit less like a foreigner and wear the local clothing. What is the likely-hood of me getting really hurt over there?

Is Washington DC really that dangerous?

I am not native to Washington DC (I actually live close to Philadelphia) but have visited DC many times. Usually I take the metro and go all throughout the city but usually stay in the more tourist type places. In a few years I will probably go to DC for college. My question is, is DC as dangerous as people say, I know about being aware of your surroundings and all cities have problems, but I mean even being in the nice parts of Philly are pretty dangerous, are the people talking about DC just being over dramatic, because it really doesn't seem all that bad to me (especially compared to being in Phil. all the time)

How dangerous is Paris late at night?

Paris is very safe compared to most other cities, but general caution should be used. Definitely do your best to not look like a tourist. Do not make it look obvious if you are looking at street signs, avoid eye contact and dont answer anyone asking you for change or men trying to get attention somehow. Definitely not. Dont keep money or important things in your outside pockets where they can get picked. In general if you stick to more populated areas and look like youre keeping to yourself, you should be fine. The people you want to avoid are the ones who will try to get your attention. If you look at them or speak to them in any way, they go nuts. I moved to paris when I was 19 and learned these things the hard way!! But in general you should be fine. Good luck! :)

Is Japan a dangerous place to travel alone?

Japan is the safest country in Asia to visit. Of course anyone needs to use common sense. Like not hanging around night clubs at 2 in the morning...
Osaka, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Hiroshima are a few cities that are interesting to visit.
Japan has a low crime rate. If you lost your wallet on the ground, 9 times out of ten someone would turn it in with nothing missing.

Is Kabukichō in tokyo really that dangerous especially at night?

hahaha, yeah, I was warned not go there, but it seemed alright, just don't go looking for trouble. I went there once, and I saw police bust into a building and coming out with some guys in suits, cameras were all over the place. Just as long as you keep it cool, and don't look at people in the wrong way your fine. There is this one awesome restaurant there, loved it. A friend of mine was confronted by yakuza, and since he was black, they asked him if he was in a gang, he replied no, im a student, and they paid for his dinner, hahaha. So just be careful. haha. And im sure if you look like a tourist, they wont want to bother with you, and careful with those crazy "black" people, not trying to sound racist or anything, but you guys know what I mean, those guys outside bars, usually dudes from Africa, not Africa Americans, but native African dudes, but they will usually invite ya in for a drink, or to come in for cheap beer, becareful with that, your better off staying away from that area, but then again curiousity always gets the best of us.

Is Guatemala City, Guatemala really that dangerous?

I was like you before my first trip to Guatemala 3 years ago. I was fine until I read the State Dept. Travel Warnings. I was very nervous about going down there, but I came back without any problems and my dealings with the police were very respectful and pleasant. While Guatemala averages about 8 murders a day, it is rarely ever a tourist. You do need to be careful about street robberies, but common sense should prevail. If you have a choice about walking around the well lit block or taking a shortcut through the alley, use common sense and stay in the well lit areas. I've lived near Washington DC most of my life and know every alley, street, and neighborhood. That doesn't mean I would go to these places after dark. I've attached two links about crimes not to scare you, but to show you it does happen but not as frequent as people think. People there will be happy to see you because they know you will spend your money.
