Knife Laws In Colorado

Knife Laws for Eagle Scout..?

Folding pocket knives are legal just about anywhere in the US, except in certain particular cases. Your status as an Eagle Scout (nor your skin-tone) will normally have next-to no effect upon this.

For more-or-less obvious reasons, carrying a knife to a school, or a police station, or an airport - - could cause you ...difficulties...

As an adult leader in Scouting, it is actually a good idea for you to be carrying a good, folding pocket knife - to be an example of responsible knife use, an example of 'be prepared', and so you can have your own knife available if/when you might need to have a 'teaching moment' with some of the new scouts - to show them the proper handling, care and use of a knife.

As an Eagle Scout, you know (or you darn well *should* know) when it is, and is not appropriate to be using a knife. Generally, I have a pocket knife in my pocket, but if it is available, a belt-mounted knife 'holster' is just fine - particularly when scouting. Not quite so much, perhaps, in your regular life.

Congratulations on the Eagle, and thanks for your efforts as an adult leader now. (If you haven't yet, let me strongly encourage you to go through the Woodbadge advanced leadership training.)

How old do you have to be to buy a knife in Colorado?

you have to be 18 to purchase a knife. However, there is no age restriction-if you have someone that can buy the knife for you, you are allowed to carry the knife provided you remain under your local knife carry laws. Now, with knives there are none of the politics of guns, no registration unless you have to register for concealed carry permits.

In Colorado, how is a "legal" knife blade measured?

READ THE QUESTION!!!!!! I AM NOT INTERESTED IN RUMORS OR " WHAT I HEARD WAS" ANSWERS. I KNOW THE CODE ON 3.5 INCHES AND WHATEVER, I WANT TO KNOW HOW THEY MEASURE - AND IT ISN'T WITH HAND SIZE - GET REAL!!!

In Colorado can I carry a sheath knife on my belt like John Rambo does in the Rambo First Blood? What age do you have to be and what are the requirements?

Anyone who wants to carry a knife to look like Rambo is probably a moron who probably shouldn’t carry a knife. But that is the correct answer to a different question. In ColoradoDirks, daggers, push knives and stilettos are legal.Bowie knives and other large blades are legal.Disguised knives like belt knives, pen knives, cane knives, and lipstick knives are legal.Ballistic, switchblade, and Gravity knives are illegal. It is illegal to carry a knife with a blade over 3.5″ if it is CONCEALED…unless it is a fishing or hunting knife. So, if you open-carry a fixed blade knife over 3.5″ long (meaning it is visible in its sheath), and especially if the design is easily recognized as a hunting or fishing style knife, you’d be fine.Be aware that Colorado has an additional problem: state laws are not uniform, so some liberal cities have laws that complicate things. Boulder, for example, doesn’t allow any knives to be concealed. So I guess that 3″ folding knife you use to cut apples might be fine, or it might get you arrested.

Are assisted open knives legal in Colorado?

That would be illegal in Colorado.}{

Colorado - Criminal Code Section 18-12-101. Definitions...
(e) "Gravity knife" means any knife that has a blade
released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of
gravity or the application of centrifugal force, that when
released is locked into place by means of a button,
spring, lever, or other device... (f) "Knife" means any
dagger, dirk, knife, or stiletto with a blade over 3-1/2
inches in length, or any other dangerous instrument
capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing
wounds, but does not include a hunting or fishing knife
carried for sports use. The issue that a knife is a
hunting or fishing knife must be raised as an affirmative
defense. (j) "Switchblade knife" means any knife, the
blade of which opens automatically by hand pressure
applied to a button, spring, or other device in its
handle... (a.3) "Ballistic knife" means any knife that has
a blade which is forcefully projected from the handle by
means of a spring-loaded device or explosive charge.

Are balisongs/ butterfly knifes illegal in the state of colorado??????

First off, the law covers carrying, not owning. Laws on ownership of knives are extremely rare.

Under Colorado's Criminal Code Section 18-12-101, a "gravity knife" is:

"any knife that has a blade released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force, that when released is locked into place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other device"

TECHNICALLY a balisong doesn't lock into place, it just is held open due to it's design. So they don't fit Colorado's definition per se. When I ran a search for case law on it, I could not find any cases where a person was prosecuted for a butterfly knife, which would seem to back that up.

However, under the general knife laws, one cannot carry any concealed knife with a blade longer than 3.5 inches. So if it's smaller than that, it is legal to carry.

Two cautions I must give: Police officers are not always up to speed on little technicalities like this, so one carrying a balisong still can be at risk of arrest should one give them a reason to know you have one. Second, balisongs are frankly a very poor, over-rated design that are only popular thugs and street punks because they look cool. They are not practical knives at all and are an outdated design.

I am 18 and live in Colorado (United States). I want to buy a large knife. Can I legally do this?

Yes, but other than a machete for cutting brush or a typical chef’s knife - why would you want one?But if you have phantasies of violence or revenge, suspect you might become obsessive, or are sensing that you’re loosing your grip on reality please seek a confidential conversation with someone you trust or a neutral person on a hotline:Callers to the Colorado Crisis and Support Line will be able to speak with mental health professionals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 844-493-TALK (8255).

Is the coldsteel Ti-Lite knife legal?

Knife laws are by state. Now, Cold Steel likes to shoot their mouth off about the legality of their knives (i.e. claiming a knife is "legal" when they are US-wide seller where all states have different laws).

That said, the Ti-Lite is indeed legal in Alabama. It is NOT a switchblade. It's handle and blade shape are an Italian knife style known as a "stiletto" (long skinny blade with little hand-guards). Many stilettos were switchblades, but not all, and the Ti-Lite is not because it has no springs or buttons. I know, I own one myself. You have to push the blade open with your finger, or you can catch the little hand-guard on your pants pocket as you pull it out (this trick is called a "wave"). There are no laws against this type of knife, and Alabama has pretty relaxed laws in general (basically only "Bowie knives" and large fixed blades are illegal).
