Medication For Pigeons

My pigeons are sick and dizzy?

The first and most likely answer is that you have PMV1 infection in the loft. The dizzy and drinking lots of water makes that an almost 100% certainty. The rest are likely to get ill as well. If you can, the first and best course is to vaccinate everything immediately with PMV1 vaccine (don't have a brand name for you because of where you are, but a veterinary surgeon should be able to tell you.

The only thing that you can do for the rest is supportive treatment - depending on the strain of the disease, you may have anywhere from 40-80% mortality (it doesn't bother people at all, so that's not a concern). Those that survive often have permanent damage of some sort - though some will survive and recover totally.

DO NOT bring in any new birds until the infection is over. DO NOT visit other breeders - the virus can be carried on the dust of your clothes or shoes from an infected loft to a new one. DO NOT give any of your birds to another fancier until the disease is well over.

Once the disease is over - make sure that you vaccinate your loft each year - the disease was first reported about fifteen or twenty years back now in Pakistan, and it's spread around the world.

Very sick Pigeon...disoriented?

I am going to admit straight away that I don't know much about pigeons. My high school boyfriend's little brother kept pigeons, but I am ashamed to admit that I didn't talk to him much and never about the birds. Later I learned more about pigeons and how important they have been as messengers, especially during the World Wars. I have also been very much moved by the song, "The King of Rome."

I looked the symptoms up on the internet, and this could be PMV, Pigeon paramyxo virus; here is a website that explains what to do: http://www.pigeonrescue.co.uk/pigeonpara...
Since this is an infectious disease you want to isolate her from other birds and find treatment as soon as possible. You can try hand-eeding her some thawed peas if she can't eat seed. If you can't find an exotic animal or avian vet in your town, try consulting a country vet who might work with chickens.

This might also be poisoning. When we first moved to the house where we live now, there were several incidents of pigeons exhibiting they symptoms you mentioned among the birds that nested on my neighbor's roof. I set out feeders, and often the pigeons would come to our yard and eat seed from the ground. I saw this a couple of time, but have not seen it since the neighbor moved 15 years ago, although there are still pigeons nesting there. The disease these birds were exhibiting appeared to neurologic in nature, but I haven't seen it since the neighbor moved, so I can only assume he was poisoning them.

At any rate, get your bird to a vet as soon as possible. Look at the website and also look up the disease on the internet. Be sure to keep her isolate and yourself shoes and hand clean so you don't spread it to your other birds if it is a virus. Good luck, and I wish her well.

How long does it take for pigeon's wing feathers to grow back?

!. Stop feeding mealworms, pigeons are grainiverous. Give it a mixed seed mixture.
2 - if the feathers have been cut, then it will take about 4 -5 months for the natural molt to replace them.
3 if the feathers have been pulled out either by a person or predator, then the replacement feathers should begin to grow in within ten days and be fully grown within a month - please don't let the bird try to fly while all the feathers are in the blood quill stage.
4. Rabbit cage is better without a doubt.

NO it's not vermin.

As to any lice or mites on it - just go to any grocery or pet store and pick up a spray for parakeets (budgies) that they use for mites and lice and you can spray the bird with that. Keep the spray out of its eyes. Pigeons lice and mites are species specific and won't transfer to humans. Red mites are a possible exception to that, but if as you say the birds eyes are bright, then the chances of red mites are at about 0.5%

What is the cause of cloudy eye/pupil of a pigeon?

I kinda notice that one of my pigeons have a cloudy appearence in its eye/pupil. I just want to know what causes this cloudiness of the eye/pupil. are there any medications for this?

Why my pigeon is loosing feathers?

Could it be molting. Birds molt at different times of the year. If not Per Understanding Moltingif your bird is losing feathers at a time other than its regular molting period, there may be a problem. Often, feather loss due to plucking can be mistaken for molting. Some potential causes of plucking are:Boredom or lack of exerciseToo much or not enough natural sunlightToo much or not enough humidityImproper nutritionIllnessIn particular, birds will often pluck their own feathers during the winter, when household humidity often drops. Most birds that are kept as pets are naturally used to a rainforest climate, so their feathers can become dry and itchy. To remedy this, be sure that your bird has access to a birdbath, and try lightly misting its feathers with water once a day. This will make its home environment more similar to wet, humid rainforests.Abnormal MoltingMost species of parrots, cockatoos, and macaws and lovebirds are vulnerable to a virus called Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD. PBFD attacks the immune system and the cells responsible for feathers and beaks, and will often show up when birds molt. If your bird’s feathers grow back abnormally, are missing, or are loose immediately after molting, you should immediately contact your veterinarian and make sure that it isn’t sick. There is no cure for PBFD and the disease is highly contagious so prompt treatment and prevention are the best ways to combat this illness.

How do messenger pigeons work? How do they know where to go?

The pigeons used to carry messages are called homing pigeons. These pigeons are particularly good at remembering where they live, and finding their way even when they’ve been transported tremendous distances away from it. If you want to be really sure your messages will get through, you’ll give the pigeons a few trial runs first, to make sure they know the way.You take the pigeons from their home, put them into cages, and transport them to your location. When you want to send a message, you strap it in a special lightweight case to the pigeon’s leg, and you let the pigeon go.It simply flies home, that’s all.Pigeons don’t fly anywhere else — only home. The advantage to a pigeon-borne message is that it’s unlikely to be intercepted, and the pigeon will head for home very fast — faster than a car could ever get there. The disadvantage is that pigeons can sometimes become lost, and they’re certainly prone to being picked off by predators. So, often, messages would be repeated with multiple birds, so that at least one pigeon would make it home.

How can I untie really tight string off a pigeons foot?

Go to this site
http://nycprc.org/
and they have this
http://nycprc.org/StringRemoval.html

http://www.pigeonrescue.co.uk/welcome.htm
and they have this
http://www.pigeonrescue.co.uk/footinjuriesstring.htm

It is a lot harder than you expect at times because of how deep the string can go and the bleeding and the infections and the medication and time healing and more infections. Most posting just say to take a bird to a vet- which will cost hundreds of dollars at least. Most rehab places will not help pigeons/doves, sparrow, starlings, etc. And I know because i asked locally- we do not even have a rehab place last time i checked- and I would have to catch a plane to the nearest one (I live on a island) and all planes here would refuse to let a sick bird in cargo even if i paid for it.

There are places that do these rescues but they are very few- mostly because they cannot afford it due to lack of sufficient donations- federal funds do not cover common "nuisance" birds.
Here is a cute site
http://www.pigeonrescue.org/

This is a pigeon web site that seems to have a list and a running blog of people asking for a nearby place that will help a hurt pigeon and where people can blog in about a place that will take pigeons.

http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/f106/pigeon-resources-for-rescue-and-rehab-8817.html

Most of these sites have lists or contact sites and there are a few more pigeon rescue places listed online= just type in Pigeon Rescue. You can call you local bird society (I did and wow talk about caring people who knew vets specializing in avian medicine and free care). Try all ASPCA's - some have free or low cost vets. No Kill rescue/rehab- some know good low cost vets. Zoos and pet stores that specialize in Birds. Call all and everyone and ask for a name or phone number of someone who maybe of help.

These are the sites with a lot of info.

Hope this helps and THANK YOU FOR CARING.

Pigeon breeders, my pigeons droppings are green is that normal?

There is nothing wrong with your bird !!!

Green poop is quite normal, this could be a number of things birds do not urinate as a separate function it is included in their droppings and that is why your birds could be green ,also does it have acces to green veg,(which it should)as this can also be the reason.

So their is nothing to worry about.

Feel free to come back for any more info.
