My Cat Is Sneezing A Lot Should I Be Concerned

My cat is sneezing a lot, should I be worried?

*Sigh* With the overcrowding in shelters these days, I think it would be better to scratch out the "can" and put in "will" get an upper resp.

Upper resp issues in shelter animals is pretty typical, but that is not to say it isn't something more serious, as these 'kennel' issues can mimic or disguise other issues.

Your vet will either prescribe antibiotics or tell you to ride it out (probably the former). Right now, your kitten is sleeping more in an effort to conserve his strength and help heal his body. He should be fine until Monday.

However, if he starts to show serious distress -- like gasping for air or repeated hacking up fluid, or stops eating and drinking, it would be wise to take him in earlier.

I have had luck treating my cats' colds/upper resp issues small amounts of L-Lysine, vitamin C (you can find varieties made for pets), and cod liver oil. I use capsules of fish oil because the human stuff is usually flavored. The Lysine helps suppress herpes, C for the cold, and the oil for stink and omega-3's. I grind up the pills with a pestle and mortar and add just a pinch to about two tablespoons of food. I only recommend this treatment if you absolutely know that this is what you're dealing with and never give a cat human doses of ANYTHING.

Good luck with your new kitty, and thank you for rescuing a shelter animal.

My new shelter cat is sneezing?

Yes. She has an upper respiratory infection, and from the color of the mucus it sounds like she may have a secondary bacterial infection. Another secondary infection they can develop is pneumonia, which can be life-threatening. Keep her eating over the weekend, whatever you can tempt her with, because she needs to stay hydrated, and cats can develop liver disease if they don't eat for a few days. Bring her in first thing Monday, and the vet will give you antibiotics for her.

Good luck. I hope your new kitty's feeling better soon.

It could be kitty herpes, which often manifests as an upper respiratory issue. It could be overly dusty cat little, or something else in the environment that’s bothering him.First, you ought to switch to a cat litter that advertises that it’s dust-free.Second, you ought to vaccuum your floors regularly.Thirdly, get kitty to a vet. Even after the vet visit, continue with the dust-free litter, and the vacuuming. Also, add Viralys to kitty’s diet - it’s a powder, and a spoonful or so should go on his food. It helps prevent a number of issues, including kitty herpes, and the shelter cats I’ve worked with always always got it with their food. I’ve never have a cat who minded it.

Great question, Kate! It turns out you have much more to be concerned about if your cat drinks regularly. What?? Yes, it's because cats are desert creatures, made to conserve water, and are actually very inefficient drinkers if they are pushed to it with dry food feeding.Healthy cats, measured in natural situations, drink about twice a week. So, feed this little carnivore species appropriate food, stay away from the vaccinations and flea poisons, and you'll protect her kidneys into old age. Here's a page I called No Kibble for Kitty! that'll be a good starting place to learn more: http://vitalanimal.com/no-kibble...Don't miss the vaccination component, though. Turns out we're damaging cat kidneys (and making thirsty cats as a result) with the commonest vaccines. You can follow a link within that page above to track this one.All the best to you and your (likely healthy) kitty!

My cats been sneezing quite a lot over the last couple of months, is this something to worry about?

Every year when it starts to get colder outside, right after people start turning on their furnaces, we get inundated with kitties who suddenly start sneezing. Usually there are no other symptoms. For the most part, these kitties are just fine. The furnace is simply blowing out dust and other allergens that have been trapped in the filter for months after a period of disuse. (Don't forget to change that filter regularly!) Our doctors sometimes prescribe an antihistimine or nasal drops, depending on the severity.

Even kitties in milder climates may start sneezing from random irritants in the air.

If kitty is sneezing only, chances are it is nothing to worry about. I always recommend a trip to the vet just in case as it is impossible to diagnose over the internet. If there are other symptoms such as ocular or nasal discharge, congestion, lethargy or decreased appetite, then you're looking at something more serious.

Why has my cat been sneezing so much?

Sneezing is a very common sign of 'Feline Upper Respiratory Disease Complex". If he is sneezing that much he has either gotten a respiratory virus or something else like allergies is going on. Regardless this is something that requires a visit to your vet. With any luck he is coping with it well and will work his own way through it without requiring treatment for secondary bacterial infections. I've attached a link to a helpful page for you.

Edit: typo

My cat sneezes a lot, should I be taking him to a vet?

Yes.. I would definitely take the cat to a vet! He could just have a cold or he could have a respiratory infection .. Symptoms to look for are:
Sneezing
Congestion
Runny nose
Cough
Clear to colored nasal discharge
Gagging, drooling
Fever
Loss of or decreased appetite
Rapid breathing
Nasal and oral ulcers
Squinting or rubbing eyes
Open-mouth breathing
Depression
If left untreated it could lead to pneumonia, blindness, or chronic breathing difficulties and kittens are definitely at a higher risk for it. Even if it is just a cold it could lead to respiratory infection so taking him to the vet would prevent all of that

Should I be worried that my house cat has been sneezing?

My cat (9 years old) has sneezed a few times in the past two days. She's never sneezed before and I was wondering if I should be worried? She's not sneezing a lot, maybe about six times that I've noticed in two days.

She's a house cat, doesn't interact with other animals and other than a few sneezes, she seems absolutely fine. She's not off her food or anything but I just read a few posts about cat flu and now I'm worried.

She never leaves the house and I don't want to take her to the vets if it's not necessary because I don't want to take her near any animals who might actually pass something more serious onto her.

Nothing's changed in the house so I don't thinks he can be allergic to anything. She does have long hair though and that might have irritated her, it sometimes gets in her eyes.

Will taking her into the bathroom when the shower's running help? I read that somewhere.

Thanks!

My kitty has been sneezing a lot HELP?

Hmmm... That does not sound good.

I would consult a vet as fast as possible. A cold can be very serious for a cat.

Some other symptoms to look for is Goo around the corner of the eyes. This is like a to a stuffed nose for a human.

Some other signs can be drooling, ( Stuffed up nose not rabbis ), a high fever and maybe not eating her food. Some cats will not eat what they can not smell.

But don't worry if it is a cold. Unlike humans, some good antibiotics will cure her quick. Just keep her separate from the other cats and dogs in the house. A cold can spread FAST through the house.

Just keep her warm and comfortable for tonight. Check on her a couple of times in the night to make sure she is breathing comfortably. If she is not, DO NOT hesitate to take her to a Emergency clinic.

I have two cats. One always has a cold... the other gets it the next day despite what I do. I have been through this a million times. It is scary, but you will be okay.

Good Luck!

My cat sneezes a lot? I'm a bit worried.?

It could be either. Your best bet is to have her looked over by a vet to make sure it is nothing serious. Cats will sneeze just like humans do, but that many times isn't normal. Good luck!

edit: Mike is wrong....your cat is not in the late stages of life. 14 is not old when the average life span of an indoor cat is 20 years or more. The vet is always a good place to go if something is bothering you about you pet, even if you just call to ask a few question, they will always be of more help than anyone here will be. Don't listen to people that would suggest otherwise.
