My Cat Keeps Puking Several Hours After He Is Fed.

Why is my cat throwing up a few hours after eating?

Hi Ella,

A cat that throws up several hours after eating generally is not the result of eating too fast, so that is probably not the issue here.

You may not like what I have to say, and I know that it seems to be somewhat controversial in this community, but dry food is really made for the convenience of humans, not for the nutritional needs of felines. While the dry food manufacturers claim that their products are nutritionally great, dry food is really difficult to digest, contains too many carbs, which cats do not need. Cats are obligate carnivores and need meat!

It is possible your cat may be allergic to the food, or that something else is going on medically that needs to be checked out by a vet. Cats do vomit occassionally, but a cat that is vomiting on a regular basis, needs to be checked out. That is not normal.

I have an Oriental Shorthair, aged 8 years-old, that started vomiting on a regular basis, several hours after eating his moist food. We stopped all dry food in our house a long time ago. Turns out that my cat has an allergy- based irritable bowel problem, which I would not have known about unless I had had him evaluated by a vet. He too was playing and appeared to be fine, but vomiting was a major issue. This can lead to dehydration, and is very stressful for our cats. Imagine yourself vomiting after a couple of hours after you eat!

The yellowish color is from bile which shows partially digested food.

Here are some good things to read about why cats vomit.

Hope this helps and good luck with your kitty. Hope there is a simple solution. Once my cat was diagnosed and treated, he is no longer vomiting, which is a huge relief. We are feeding him Venison and Peas, made by Natural Balance. He loves it, and it loves him, apparently:)

Why is my cat puking every morning?

The past week my cat has puked almost every morning - MTWT, not F but then twice today (Saturday). He doesn't really puke up anything, mostly just saliva, maybe a little tiny bit of furball.
He is fine otherwise, eats and acts normally. I took him to the vet last week for a checkup and he had 2 shots (rabies and FVRCP). He is overweight so I have been feeding him slightly less food. Could he be puking because he is hungry? I don't give him that much less. He started doing this exactly 1 week after going to the Vet. I'm not sure what could be wrong with him.

3 month Kitten keeps puking and passing stool. Help!?

Hi All,
Need help regarding my kitten.

History -

- Separated from mother at about 2 days after birth. Has been reared by hand since then. Fed a diet of milk formula initially for 6 weeks, and then cerelac ( infant cereal ), rice formula. Had started her on a diet of boiled mashed fish with rice about a week back ( one meal per day, accompanied with the cerelac and milk formula in other meals of the day ).

- She has been given deworming once from the vet at about 6 weeks.

Gave her cat food "whiskas" or something ( made in S.Africa ). Processed meat cutlets in gravy. Mashed them up so she could eat em properly.

After about 12-16 hours, and after taking one meal of cerelac and also milk formula, she started pooping a lot, and passing a lot of urine. All normal in color.

Now she has puked roughly 5-6 times, and at all times whitish froth is coming out. The last she puked i saw a few chunks of the cat food ( very very small ).

Her last stool was quite watery and loose, Other all were normal.

She is looking really de-hydrated, and extremely exhausted with the puking. I tried bottle feeding her some milk formula, but she would not take it, so i dint want to exhaust her more, and have left her to rest.

Please advise, is it just a reaction to the cat food? ( because the cat food was given before also, when she was about 8 weeks, but only twice and in much much lesser amount ).

Should i not feed her anything for the next 6-10 hours and let her system clear itself up, or try and give her something??

- This is the first time handling a kitten, and that too from day 2-3 of birth of the kitten. Have experience with dogs from 2 weeks old, but not with a kitten.

My cat threw up yesterday and he also keeps gagging if we pick him. is he gonna be fine after a few days?

Could be a hairball. Could be something more serious. If going on for greater than 24 hours, take to the vet. Any history of eating something he shouldn't have, like a string? Can you look in his mouth at the base of his tongue and see a string tied there? I would be worried about a foreign body, something causing him to be blocked and causing him to gag. Very suspicious of linear foreign body.

Hopefully just a hairball.

Take to the vet if not better, please.

Why does my cat keep throwing up after she eats her food?

Is she throwing up or just regurgitating her food?Regurgitation is pretty quick, within a couple of minutes and the whole lot comes back up, more or less looking the same as when it went down. Rescue cats do this a lot because they get used to having to eat really fast. If this is the case, stop feeding her so much in one go and don’t give it in a bowl. Spread her daily food into more frequent, smaller meals and spread it out on a large plate or tray so that she can’t shovel in huge mouthfuls. With regurgitation the cat will often look “surprised” and then try and eat it again.Being sick will involve partially digested food coming back up, perhaps with foam. It will not not look like biscuits or whatever you feed her, and the colour may have changed. If she is doing this and her behaviour has changed you need to take her to the vet and speed is of the essence. The cat will not try and eat it again.Regurgitation will not hurt your cat, but it won’t be pleasant for her, so try and adjust how you feed her.All cats throw up, as a cat owner you need to pay attention to what it looks like, what’s in it and what it smells like! Pay close attention to her behaviour, her eyes, her breath, and how she is sitting. Cats are very subtle creatures, especially when ill so you need to start recognising the signs.Good luck!

Help! Cat ate beef jerky and won't stop vomitting!?

I have three adult cats. I have fed them beef jerky many times without any issues. My oldest cat is 9 years old and weighs about 20 pounds (I'm aware he is overweight and have dieted before to no avail). He has been known to have a very sensitive stomach such as, sometimes when we put his food bowl down in the morning he will eat too fast and within minutes puke a portion of his meal and be fine for the rest of the day.

I have fed him beef jerky (unseasoned) before in the past but my boyfriend, not being very knowledgeable about older cats, gave him a piece of Jack's Links Teriyaki beef jerk. It wasn't very big, probably about the size of a nickel. Now he's puking all over the house. First it was just the dry cat food he had eaten earlier and eventually he vomited the complete piece of jerky he had been fed. To help clean out any toxins he may have ingested, I gave him some grass. Now he's puking liquid and foam. Is this a common side effect of the grass or should I be concerned? If it is due to the jerky, what at-home remedies can I use?

I'm very tight on money and vets here are VERY expensive. If it's absolutely necessary, I can and will take him to the vet but would prefer to simply treat him myself, naturally though not at the expense of my cat's health.

Why did my cat just barf up all his food from this morning?

One of my two cats occasionally barfs up his food. I don't know which one b/c I've never seen him do it. But anyways, it just seems like sometimes he scarfs down too much food and doesn't chew it well enough so it upsets his stomach. There has never been any hair in the mess, just barely chewed food. If it continues to happen (like daily or more than once a week) I would definitly take him to the vet, but as you can see from your answers a lot of cat owners will report their cat puking from time to time.

Happy cleaning!
