My Ferret Poops Everywhere

Ferret poops everywhere if I let her out?

you may need to take her to the vet if she poops in the middle of the room. because ferrets instictivly poop backing into a corner. If they refuse to go in the little box (assuming you have 2 or 3 outside of the cage in corners she does poop in then it could very well be a medical problem. When she does poop outside of the litter box put in into the litter box and show her that is where she is supposed to go. NEVER punish your pet for not going in the right spot this will only give her a complex about it and make her insecure. The mother of the ferret may scruff the baby for doing something wrong but never will she punish them by scruffing for not going potty in the right spot.

HELP! my ferrets poop EVERYWHERE!!!?

I have several ferrets 2 of which Ive had since they were babies and 2 I got as adults. What I've learned with my ferrets is you have to constantly be on their little behinds while trying to train them NOT to poop everywhere. When you get them from a store they are in a cage where the do just go wherever and in the wild obviously there aren't little ferret reststops.. lol.. I kept mine in a ferret cage and kept the cage in a spot I would see it more often than not (in the living room). I found that corner litter boxes did me no good because they were just to small and they wouldn't use them. I went out and got cat size litter boxes and cat litter (non clumping, as the clumping kind is bad for your ferrets). I set the 2 boxes up on the bottom of the cage, 1 in each corner and then every single time I saw them starting to go somewhere that wasn't in the box I'de just lift up their butt and put it in the box. When I would see that they were using the boxes they would get treats. Then I would let them out to run around and adjust the ladder so they had a ramp to get in and out of the cage so they could use the litter box, if they went outside of the cage on the floor then play time was over and no treat. Eventually they got it.. You could also keep a seperate box outside of the cage so they can go there and don't have to keep going in and out of the cage. I have to do that with mine now because they are older. After they were litter trained I found putting carpet in the cage kept them from going places other than in the litter box also. I know you said you put cloth down on the floor and they still go but maybe that will change if you can get them to start going in the boxes. Make sure to keep the spots they use the bathroom (litter boxes) clean, ferrets are like cats where they don't like to go in a dirty box therefore they will go outside of the box. Every once in awhile you may still get a surprise.. Ferret training isn't always 100% fool proof.. Also when looking into treats for your ferrets please don't give them raisins, cereals, etc. there are sugars in these things and they are VERY bad for the long term health of your ferret. One of my ferrets was fed a VERY VERY bad diet by the person I got her from a few years ago and now Im afriad she suffers from Insulinoma where she gets seizures and such.

My Ferret poops and pees everywhere in his cage what can i do?

I Just bought a ferret about 3 weeks ago.. He is only about 12 to 13 weeks old but he has a problem with going to the bath room everywhere. I don't think this is healthy because he walks in it. When i bought him they said he would be pretty much litter trained when i get him home. He was for the first week but now he likes to make a mess out of the cage... any suggestions to help me get him back to going in his litter pan would be helpful! Thanks p.s. i have purchased a mini litter pan to put in the places where he goes i figure if i can get him use to the litter again i can take that one out and he may go back to his usual one.

Why does my ferret poop so much and everywhere?

If you did your research before buying her you would know that they poop a lot, so if it's such a "pain" you shouldn't have gotten her. It's called responsibility of a pet. Ferrets have a short digestive tract so they go to the bathroom every 2-4 hours. So yes, this is normal.

It is never too early to start litter box training. What kind of litter box is it? Is it triangular or rectangular? The triangular ones are worthless, ferrets hate them. Get the biggest litter box you can find for her. Also, did you change the litter that was at whatever place you got her from? Try using Marshall Ferret litter.

Edit: Sorry but I've seen to many people get ferrets, complain, and possible get rid of them all because they never even researched or knew what they were getting into. I am not saying you are getting rid of yours but most people end up doing that.

Edit: Karen B, Yes you don't scruff for potty training but you do for biting. It doesn't hurt them, it's been researched. So pick up a book or two. You are the only person I've heard say this. And yes if their mothers did it, it is fine. Haven't you seen any animal shows where rescued animals get scruffed because it calms them down because their mothers did it?

How can I stop my Ferret from pooping everywhere?

what everybody is saying about training is good.

For the smell: ferrets smell honey, that's just part of the deal. ALSO, i put something called Bi-Odor in their water. It helps cut down on smell.

Always keep them and their cages clean!

Good luck, owning a ferret takes tons of time, patients, and love. Being a parent of a ferret really means being a parent.

My ferret poops almost everywhere in his cage, except his litter box?

You need to more the poop into the liter box to entice him to go in the liter box. I own three ferrets and they live in the ferret mansion. One bottom half of the cage is a total liter box that I cut two cat liter boxes in half and glued them together cutting the front open so they can back into it. They seem to like that. B/c I had issues with the liter boxes not being flat enough to the ground for them to back into or the corner ones being so far apart that they would just back up in the middle of them. The main thing is to keep an eye on him and if you see him backing up put him in the liter box. When he realizes there is poop in there he may get the point.

Do ferrets poop all over the house?

Ferrets are 80% litter-trainable. Of course, some are better than others, but with ferrets, there is always the risk of an accident. Unlike cats, a ferret doesn't have the patience to go into another room to go into the litter tray- they will typically go to the closest corner. Litter training a ferret is possible, but it's a difficult life-long process. A ferret isn't like a cat where you teach it where to go and it remembers- litter training is a life-long process with a ferret.

Ferrets poop about 7-10 times a day. They have a very fast digestive system and there's a LOT of poop. I wish I would have known how often they poop before i got one. With a ferret, you have to clean the litter box at least once or twice a day.

Ferrets will not poop on you. Ferrets are hunters/carnivores and are nothing like Hamsters (they'd love to eat a hamster tho!)! If I had to pick, I'd compare a ferret to a kitten on speed.

Ferrets can be destructive if they aren't given enough exercise. They won't poop on your couch, but they will use their sharp claws to dig or chew on it. They are masters at finding trouble.

I want to get a weasel but I don't want it to poop everywhere in my house, what can I do to avoid it?

I have never known of anyone with a pet weasel. I don't even know how one would go about finding one, but presuming you have a source there are some things you should consider before getting one. First, unlike ferrets, weasels are not domesticated. I have had several ferrets and know that even they can be hard to control. Both animals are in the same family, so I'm sure a weasel would be much more difficult. Moreover, you say you don't want the weasel to “poop” in your house. So I infer you don't plan on keeping it in a cage, at least not all the time. This is a recipe for disaster. Weasels are extremely high strung, quick, and even the long tailed weasel (the largest weasel in the US, the smaller two being the short tailed weasel and the least weasel) is capable of squeezing through openings less than one inch square. So if let out of its cage even for brief periods your weasel would almost certainly escape into the walls of your house or some other small space, and I doubt you'd be able to get it to come out.I don't see a weasel as being a good or practical pet.

Do ferrets Pee or poo on you when you hold them?

ferrets are not like hamsters or guinea pigs. They will go on in the litter box and usually like to poop in a corner. They are smart enough and hygenic enough not to excrete when somebody is holding them. Ferrets won't mind being held when they first wake up or when they are really tired but when ferrets are awake they want to play and they will struggle to get out of your hands so they can run around. Ferrets aren't like guinea pigs and hamsters in another way. They aren't that cuddly. They will run around and play with you but they don't want to be held that often. But to answer your first question they will almost never excrete while you are holding them.

How often do ferrets poop?

once every 3 hours or so. Also don't bathe them more than once or twice a year it makes them smell stronger it you bathe them frequently
