Is my hermit crab dead or surface molting?

He hasnt moved for 2 days and his shell was upside down with the opening facing straight up...I put him in water and he didnt budge, I even touched him and he didnt freak and go back into his shell like he did.He has a slight fishy smell but it isnt a strong smell like the websites say. He isnt moving and i couldve sworn a couple of days ago his eyes were white...Plz help as soon as possible, Im very confused.

My hermit crab is molting on the surface and is flipped over....is it Dead!?

i don't think he is dead ... sometimes during a molt it will seem like they are dead but they are not ... the worst smell ever will alert you to his death ... and that is not just moist tank smell, you will know when you smell it ... hermit crabs surface molt for stress and/or something missing in the environment ... be sure your little crustacean friend has all he needs to be healthy and happy because he really should be molting underground :O)

Can you help explain hermit crab molting?

Well when your hermit crab molts it will get bigger each time. Eventually your crab will gain its claw back but this progress may take a long time. You cant really tell when they are about to molt but you may notice that its getting to big for its shell. It also depends on how it feels. If theres a lot of noise it wont molt because they like to have privacy. Just think of yourself. Would you want some one watching you while you took your clothes off. Also, you should keep a bigger shell in its cage. One more thing you should know is that they can molt in the blink of an eye. If you have any more questions just comment on my profile.

Hermit Crabs molting on the surface?

I have had my hermit crab for almost a year (exactly a year in august!) but this is the first time she has really done anything abnormal.
She does dig and burro, i put like fish tank gravel just to see if she liked it and she instantly started to dig around and seemed more lively. But this has not seemed to bother her any in the past.
However, today when i went to wet her water sponge she was out of her all the way out of her shell and on the side of her cage, she has a wire cage so she climbs sometimes. but she was completely out of her shell and rock hard (I did not touch her but she looks like a giant spider!) She doesn't smell but looks terrifying!
I was wondering if she had passed or if she is molting?! Can anyone help me, PLEASE!?

OHHH, one more thing. I have researched a lot about molting, mainly because i am worried about her...I know lame but whatever. I read that stress could be harmful to them and was wondering what stresses them out. I am a teenager so music is usually very loud and candles are usually always burning, but i try to always move her to a more silent place when i do play music. Could this be a reason of her coming out of her shell?

Do hermit crabs smell when they molt?

It depends what size your hermit crab is. Normally an average sized crab to spend about 4-8 weeks going through the whole process. If its dead, she start to smell fishing within a few days. Maybe you should take her to the vet for them to check her health.

More infomation:-

A molting crab appears quite limp and lifeless and the body is often partway out of the shell. Sometimes with very careful observation you will be able to see small twitches of the hermit crabs the body.

Hermit crab molted for 2 months, up for a day and went back under the sand?

there could be many reasons for this, some hermit crabs take a long time to get used to their surroudings, and stress will lead them to do that, and molt. also, he may be coming out at night?? make sure you have his habitat set up correctly! he should be in a ten gallon aquarium at the least, with a 50/50 mix of calcium sand and coconut fiber, you need to mist the enclosure alot, they like it humid! putting a thick towel over one half of the top will help keep it high. they like it more than room temperatuire, they like it around 75-80oF!! you should add a hide out for him, a heating pad underneath the tank, somewhere, he should have a climbing/scratching branch and a choice between two water types- one bowl fresh and decholirinated- the other bowl salt water, you can buy the miz for salt water at your pet store. Try a mix of food like a crushed fruit and flower powder, crab cakes, crab meals, and fresh smuched dark greens and veggies!! give this to him all at once, they love variety. Other than that, petco is known to sell alot of their reptiles, ect, that have parasite and what not, there are treatments for this for hermies that will not cause harm if he doesnt have it, and wil prevent it and treat it!

Hermit crabs?

While on vacation my family just bought some hermit carbs. I was wondering if you can over feed the crabs cuz they seam to be eating a lot. I read on a website also that they should be kept in sand but when I owned them before I always housed them with the pebbles is that ok too?

My hermit crab was molting and shed his skin but i threw it away not knowing will he be ok?

i've done it too, don't feel too badly. the best thing to do for him right now is to get some cuttlebone or eggshell and crush it into a powder, and mix it with some honey so that it forms a thin paste. put this in a dish or clamshell or something, close by to where your hermit crab is. did he molt on the surface? this is not usually a good thing, and i'm assuming he did or you wouldn't have seen the shed exoskeleton. usually they will molt underground, in a little cave they dig for themselves. it's much healthier and less stressful for them. if your sand or coconut fibre substrate isn't deep enough, this can happen. it should be at least twice as deep as your largest crab is tall, but 3 or 4 times as deep is even better. i know this isn't the question ou asked, but it's good for future reference.

My Hermit crab won't go back into it's shell. HELP!!?
