How do update iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 9 on an iPad?

I have had this problem since iOS 8 was released. I can be reliable for days and then things get wonky until I power off and reboot. I just installed the latest bug-fix update a day ago and it has been more stable. I got a $15.00 gift card, redeemed it, then on my iPhone downloaded some songs. This was last week. My balance on the apps (when checking from iPad) still says $15. Why won't it update, I want to put a new game on the iPad for my child but am not sure if there is enough $$ left in the account since it won't update. Help!

Apple is hard on older devices. There is no doubt that you love your iPad. I still have mine iPad 2 with me, it works half the time due to its old tech.Coming to the point, NO! You cannot update your iPad by jailbreaking or without jailbreaking. Apple limited iPad 2 to iOS 9.3.5, the newer version of iOS are not supported by iPad 2.Basically, in iOS 10, Apple started focusing on 64-bit architecture and started pushing developers to develop apps that are primarily focusing on the 64 bit architecture. Therefore, nowadays, you won’t get many apps supporting old-generation iPhone or iPad devices.Furthermore, iOS 11+ firmware are strictly 64-bit devices only. When and how does iPhone & iPad download iOS updates..?
Ios update message seems to appear whenever my iPhone is either plugged in or connected to the internet. How is the update downloaded? The current ios version is 11.4 something and it's a huge 1.8 gb size. 1.8 gb takes a long time to download via wireless. It slightly annoys me that ios downloads the update without even telling me about it - this is an issue for me because I don't like updating (it doesn't really improve the device) and if the notice pops up when I'm doing something crucial I don't want to waste time dismissing the pop up. Apple should design ios so that it asks me if an update should be downloaded or not with a message when the iPhone isn't connected to itunes.
