Neck Pain When Taking A Deep Breath

Chest pains when taking a deep breath?

You are describing costochondritis quite well. Here's an excerpt from mayoclinic.com:
"Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Pain caused by costochondritis may mimic that of a heart attack or other heart conditions.

Your doctor might refer to costochondritis by other names, including chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia. When the pain of costochondritis is accompanied by swelling, it's referred to as Tietze syndrome.

Most cases of costochondritis have no apparent cause. In these cases, treatment focuses on easing your pain while you wait for costochondritis to resolve on its own. "

Another way to test to see whether this is costochondritis or not is to push on the area where it hurts. If this reproduces or increases your pain, it is very likely costochondritis.

You are correct in that anxiety often represents itself as chest pain. The fact that you have these pains late at night and that they started when you almost had a panic attack are supportive of it being related to anxiety.

I think that you'll be okay. and I'm glad to hear that you're trying to quit smoking. Things to watch out for are chest pains that worsen when you do minor exercise that doesn't involve your chest muscles: such as walking up the stairs. Another thing to watch out for is pain going up into your neck/jaw or your arm.

Neck pain when I take a deep breath ?

There's a muscle spasm that happened and is still causing your pain. To get rid of the pain you have to free up your neck muscles to release the one spasming and here's how to do that:
Neck:
Place your hands behind your head so your fingers meet in the middle of your neck. Press into the neck with a moderate pressure and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your head as far as you can, then remove the pressure from the muscles but continue holding your head down for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

How do I deal with the agony of neck pain when taking off isn't an option?

I have found that topical applications like Cryoderm help me to deal with neck pain temporarily. I don’t know the situation that you are in that you are unable to “take off” from, so that limits my ability to offer more detailed suggestions. If you are in any able to take short breaks where you are not using the muscles of your neck, that would be ideal. You could do something as simple as lean up against a wall and support your head in such a way that it eases the focal point of your neck pain for a short period. Then, if you are able to truly relax, take several deep breaths. Breathing in to the count of 3 and out to the count of 6. Then as you slowly release your breath, attempt to let your neck, upper back and shoulder muscles melt by completely releasing them… then releasing them even more with the next breath, and again for at least 3 breaths. This will not only help the neck relax, it will stop your neck and shoulder muscles from adding to your pain by contracting around the nerve centers that are so predominant in the neck, and it will calm your traumatic response that tends to take over your ability to think of anything but PAIN when things get so severe.I hope this helps you find at least some relief in your current situation. Then, once your ARE able to “take off”, be sure to reach out to your medical provider as soon as you have a chance. And don’t forget to ask for referrals to providers such as a physical therapist, and to seek out alternative therapies such as chiropractic and massage therapy.I pray you find relief.

How can you treat collarbone pain when breathing?

Collarbone pain while breathing is most likely what is known as “referred” pain. The actual source of the pain is likely the diaphragm. It can be very tired from breathing hard for a long time (running, e.g.) and yet people “feel” the pain as either pain in the collarbone or a “stitch in the side.” This is because the nerve fibers from many areas go to a central location and the brain cannot distinguish the true origin. It can also occur when people have an abdominal operation. In order to reduce infection risk and reduce bleeding, doctors may “freeze” internal areas and often, some of the diaphragm muscle is damaged. This causes pain when breathing but is perceived as pain in the collarbone. If you have such pain I would ask your doctor about it. Any kind of persistent pain can be caused by numerous different things and it’s best to check it out. Even though the two things I mentioned are the most common, there could be many other reasons. Obviously, there is no way to diagnose that without actually seeing someone.

Why does lower to mid back hurts when taking deep breath? ?

You have a muscle in your back that has been tightening up and occasionally getting pinched by the spine to cause the pains you have been having. Pinched back muscles often send pains around your body as well, to give you the pains you feel as cramps. 5 days ago this muscle got pinched and released. As time goes on they usually get pinched more and more frequent to cause more and longer pains. The pain is worse when you breath as your spine is also moving causing the extra pressure on the muscles to be more pain. To get rid of the pain you have to free up your back muscles to release the pinched ones and here's how to free them up:
Back:
(do while sitting)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

When I take deep breaths, my chest hurts. Any ideas what this is?

If the pain has only developed since you've had this slight cough I wouldn't worry too much. Its quite common to have vague chest discomfort when you have a respiratory infection. You may well have strained a muscle in your chest. Try not to breathe too deeply, your body is telling you not to do this, this is what the pain is for to remind you not to breathe deeply.

If you are still experience the pain in a few days time when your cough is better a visit to your doctor would be sensible but I doubt there is any need to rush down today, I expect they will tell you to rest, take paracetamol and it will get better once your cough is better.
