Which operating system is best for starting out young children - macOS or Windows?

Given that it is for children, chances are that they are going to be interested in gaming. Honestly I would like to say Ubuntu. It is good to expose your kids to the technical aspects of a POSIX style system with the good idea of the terminal command line. In terms of gaming, it would be good considering the new Proton stuff on Valve, you can have the ability of playing really popular titles. However when it comes to a system for kids, it is better to get one that you can build and interchange parts yourself. This essentially means that you will be able to upgrade the parts at will without breaking the bank.Truth be told, if you go down the PC route, when you get the system, most likely it will have Windows pre-installed. Windows is the most likely that you will be using because it runs most of popular applications that your kids will most likely need to use. Learning to use MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative programs as well as all those games.Now.. if I were you, I would be giving my kids something like a second hand iMac. The reason is because that MacOS can do all those things mentioned above, looks cool, reliable POSIX system and it does not have access to the games. This means that the system would be used for learning how to operate a computer and actual homework. That is pretty good. Besides, if your kids like games, then you should have a gaming console.

Why would you choose a database system instead of simply storing data in operating system files?

Operating system files lack a few things that each rendition of any application shall have to address:OS files do not provide any dictionary of the data that each file contains. So you have to understand the physical layout of each file (data type, attribute and record delimiters, parsing, missing values allowed, …). Databases have meta data about what they store that u can query as data. Each time you access a file in a certain way you will have to implement the logic to open, parse, seek, compare attribs required, return the set of data to the calling program, write changes, … a long list of features (never mind security of who gets to see which rows within a file…). Relational Databases use a Structured Query Language (SQL) to access databases that removes virtually all of this requirement from your application. The OS file does not support locking (presumably at the record level), to allow multiple applications to make changes to the same ‘file' in a consistent fashion at the ‘same' time. Each application would have to write the locking code and/or you wld need to provide a library to do so… for each file.So the answer is simple, databases offer features to applications that GREATLY reduce the amount of effort required to develope applications in many cases.Sometimes, there is a Use-Case where locking, meta-data access, security etc are NOT a consideration. An example of this would be logging files or similar that need to be processed, i.e. aggregated, and or require statistical or other numeric processing to derive information about things a business is interested in.So something like a data lake of log files from all the companyies web sites. Process them to determine who is visiting us about what and send a followup email to the visitor that was browsing coffee filters about the sale on new espresso makers (say)… basically big-data type processing (think amazon). In this case, by analysing your visits to their site, they can derive info about your preferences/interests that may lead to an additional sale, something business is DEFINITELY interested in.I hope and trust that this helps clarify the difference.Cheers

Need Some help w/ homework?

Could you please be more specific? Which one of these questions are you having trouble answering?

What if you used a gaming computer as a regular computer? Would it be more efficient to use a gaming PC to do things you would normally do with say, a MacBook/Windows computer (i.e., surfing the web)?

Are you talking about like a personal desktop or laptop computer? Nothing would happen. A computers marketed as a “gaming computer” is a computer designed to appeal to gamers, and they do this by featuring components that will perform well during gaming, but also sometimes with specific aesthetic bells and whistles. However, generally speaking, all consumer PCs (and by that, I mean Windows, Linux, and Mac computers) are designed with similar components and they run some version of one of those operating systems. A “gaming” computer will do anything a “regular” computer will do. If anything, it will do it better because they use more performant components than the kind of computer the “average” person might get. Apart from the capability of the hardware, the utility of a PC is largely dictated by the operating system and the extra software that the user chooses to install/buy, and is not really related to whether the computer was marketed as a “gaming computer”.Now, if what you meant by “gaming computer” is actually a specialized console, such as an XBox, PlayStation, or even a Wii U, or Nintendo 3DS, then that’s a different story. This systems are designed specifically for gaming, and other functionality that the developers may have included (for example, all of these consoles include web browsers). They are designed primarily for entertainment, and have unique input devices which are generally designed to work well for playing games, and maybe a few other activities such as watching movies, but not designed for manipulating spreadsheets, writing a college paper, or programming, for example.Without modification, I suppose you could use a game console as your “regular” computer, if you used it just for basic web browsing stuff. You actually could get by using the browser to shop online, read your email, etc. However, I doubt anyone would find it as convenient as using an actual PC or at least a smart phone.Generally speaking users can only run/install software on a game console that has been approved by the console’s manufacturer, so without special modifications, you will not be able to turn an Xbox or Wii U into a “regular” computer so that you can run TurboTax on it or something. It is actually possible, and “home brewers”/hackers, do this kind of thing for fun, but it’s not going to be that practical for the average user.
