Folliculitis ?

Folliculitis occurs when Staphylococcus bacteria or a fungus is able to enter the skin around a hair follicle. This can occur after using a hot tub that is not well chlorinated or when an in-grown hair irritates the follicle.

Folliculitis looks like a small, pus-filled pimple, usually around the base of a hair. Pus seeping from this pustule can be tinged with blood. While folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body, it is most likely to appear on the arms, armpits, legs, or on the scalp. Men who shave are more likely to develop folliculitis on the face. Folliculitis caused by an unsanitary hot tub is more likely to occur on the areas covered by a bathing suit, such as the buttocks. In some cases, folliculitis can result in a painful skin abscess called a boil. A boil is a pocket below the skin’s surface that contains pus and feels warm to the touch. It is rare, however, for folliculitis to cause a serious skin infection.

If you have folliculitis, do not share a razor, towel, or washcloth with anyone because the condition is contagious. If the infected hair follicles are in an area that you shave, you may need to take a break from shaving until the condition has cleared up. Always make sure the blade in your razor is new and clean to avoid infecting the area again. You can help prevent scalp folliculitis by shampooing your hair regularly. If you are prone to folliculitis, avoid hot tubs and whirlpool spas, which are frequently breeding grounds for bacteria. Call your doctor if you develop fever, warmth or pain in the infected area, or any other symptoms that worsen or spread during treatment.

Anyone who has a tendency to develop folliculitis should cleanse the skin with antibacterial soap twice a day and before shaving and should not use oily skin lotions. Men should not shave while the beard area is infected. When they begin shaving again, they should use a new blade each time. Women who have had fungal folliculitis should use depilatory creams instead of razors. Daily shampooing can help prevent folliculitis in the scalp. The spread of infection can be prevented by not sharing towels or washcloths.

This occurs when the growing hair (that was shaved) doesn't exit properly. Wear loose fitting underwear after shaving to help prevent this. Yes, using an old razor can aggravate this, plus spread infection. Use a new razor every time. PS. They can and will scar. You can buy an over the counter cleanser called Hibiclense (ask the pharmacist-not quite sure on the spelling) to help eliminate bacteria form the area. Most effectively wear loose fitting garments for a few days after shaving. If you happen to get one that becomes painful, or you can feel a lump under the skin that gets larger, you probably need to seek medical attention. (yes, as embarrassing as it may be.) Especially during this time of year (hot & sweaty) not to mention swimming pools.... bacteria breads and spreads. If you've got an infection, ya need treatment. And don't be surprised if the doctor takes a sample of the pus called a culture. The doc will send this to the lab to find out what kind, if any, bacteria is growing there and what the best type of antibiotics that will kill the inf. Remember, make sure to take all the prescription even if you feel better. And as tempting as it can be, don't start taking left over medication for a new problem or illness. Trust me, it doesn't help.

What should I do against Folliculitis?

I have been dealing with this issue for the past two years and I can say that I have now began to start healing my skin. The antibiotics made the infection resistant over time. I know the feeling you have, becoming self conscious, the itching, the embarrassment of losing hair, everything can take its toll. The first step is to stop worrying, it will cause it to flare up again. DON’T LISTEN TO THE ADVICE ON HERE. The natural remedy is working for me and it is CHEAP. Raw Honey as a cleanser and/or moisturizer, coconut oil as a moisturizer. Both depending on the pH of your skin but they should work. Use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar to cure it. YES, CURE IT. Before you shower wet the clean washcloth with warm water, saturate it in vinegar. (you can dilute it if you wish) Then gently rub it against the infected area. Shower as usual then use your favorite cleanser or shampoo to wash it off. Repeat the routine in the morning, afternoon, and at night and you should see results immediately. To Regrow hair use onions. Either make onion oil or simply cut up onions add them to water and boil them until they’re translucent or soft. Strain the water so its onion free and add it to a spray bottle. I would apply the onion solution at night before sleeping as a toner. The smell will be eliminated when you wash it off in the morning. You could take more Zinc supplements as well, anything that increases the sulfur in your hair should work but organic is the best. Within a month you should have new hair. I would repeat this daily though because folliculitis can flare up at any given moment. Over time it should heal completely though. That regimen cures acne as well. Tea-tree oil and chrysanthemum tea helps as well. Let me know how it works for you!

Why do I eat hair follicles?

I do it too. I am 14 years old and I have been pulling my hair out since I was 10. I stopped the summer before seventh grade and started again just before the christmas of eighth grade. It is the absolute worst thing that has ever happened to me. the hairs i pulled out were the coarse ones. it is in my genes. i would stop for maybe a few weeks then start again. i also have tourettes syndrome. my other tics such as blinking a lot would start up and my hair pulling would stop. i pull out the regrowth. i can't help it unless someone else is in the room with me. i started to eat my follicles and the short hairs with the follicles. they are gooey and gross. i cant help it. if i see one, i eat it. I would do anything to stop. i dont talk about it with anyone. i have only told a few of my closest friends and my mother. this is a very emotional topic for me. i cry when i tell anyone. the new growth feels sharp so i don't let anyone touch my head. i wear my hair in a high ponytail and i sport a headband to keep the new growth from showing. i have to wear a headband when i swim too.

Is my folliculitis of over 5 years still able to heal?

I would suggest you see a doctor to get it assessed properly. It may be an inflicted wound, or you may have an underlying scalp/skin problem to begin with. You can try bactroban if you think the wounds look infected. It sounds like it will take some time and perserverance to get all the scalp wounds treated properly.Go see a doctor to get an appropriate treatment rather than treating it yourself.

Why do people with cancer have there hair cut?

Not entirely sure I understand your question. If you mean why do they lose their hair, it is not the cancer, it is the chemotherapy that does it. Not every chemotherapy makes people lose their hair, but some of them do, because they kill fast growing cells and that includes the cells that hair are made of.If you mean why do they cut their hair before starting chemotherapy, I know for me it was because I thought it would be easier to lose short hair than long hair. Less of a mess and an easier adjustment. When I found out I would do chemo that would lead to hair loss, I cut my hair to my chin, then to my ears, then I got a short buzz cut. I did this over about a month and a half and when I lost my hair it was the buzz cut falling out.The other option is just in general, why do people who have cancer cut their hair? That would be the same reason anybody cuts their hair, because they want it to be shorter or neater or healthier or a different style. Not everybody with cancer has chemotherapy, not everybody who has chemotherapy loses their hair. If someone with cancer does not lose their hair, they might choose to get haircuts just like anybody else would

Is there any cure for folliculitis of the scalp?

Apparently there isn't. My dermatologist told me there is only treatment no cure. But many times there is an underlying condition that brings up folliculitis and when you manage to treat or cure that said condition then the folliculitis might actually be gone for good. But once a condition is so severe that it makes you get F then the body is quite weak already. So the main focus in that case is to build up the immune system and change daily things like wash hair and skalp daily with a natural "sensitive" shampoo, air dry, cut hair shorter so you don't use hair bands or hats that may force the hair into an unnatural position which may result in or aid the inflammation. Don't use any heavy oils or butters on the skin And i have heard wonderful things about taking tumeric and pepper in capsules daily. I ordered some to try.Unfortunately Antibiotics will not be able to cure F. Once you get off the antibiotics the F comes back worse than before. My Dr took some samples from my pimples and only once found bacteria. But i have a very server case of F with my whole skalp covered with huge sores and my hair falling like there's no tomorrow. I have bad headaches from the pain and pressure on my head and i itch and scretch 24/7 even waking myself up from it. Doing all the above mentioned things have kept it on a low since it started over 10years ago. I now have a natural "Dr" look into the cause of my F to see if we can cure the base to get rid of this. Maybe overacidic, allergies etc. I have noticed that maybe sweets and chocolate have an effect on my F. I am still /again in the experimenting stage.
