Pmr Walkie Talkie Issue

Can I apply for a license for a PMR446 walkie-talkie in India?

No you cannot. PMR 446 is using the 446Mhz UHF frequency range. India’s Wireless Planning & Coordination cell may have allotted these frequencies to other organisations. The 446Mhz is “open & license free” in many countries but not in India. In India the only “open & license free” band is the Citizen’s Band which is on 27Mhz.

How do I get a walkie-talkie license in India?

The procedure is to approach Wireless Planning & Coordination wing (Home Page:Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing, Government of India) with an application to allot you a frequency. There are dedicated spot frequencies for video shooting/film shooting etc. Once you get the frequency allocated, walkie talkies which are configured on that frequency have to be procured. The walkie talkies which are sold through eBay, Amazon etc. are illegal to be used in India. The frequencies in which these walkie talkie operates are not license free in India. There are also vendors who can do the entire work of license procurement from WPC and get the walkie talkies as well.

What kinda walkie talkie is this? - Zero ZWT-328 ? and in what frequency it works?

PMR-446, not legal in the USA. It's used in the UK in Europe.

In the USA you'd be interfering on the 70 cm Amateur Radio band. Perfectly legal in all nations that use the pmr-446 system.

Two way radio (walkie-talkie) channel question?

There are many different factors that can come into play as to why you aren't picking up the transmission. I will list a few:

- They could be using a different privacy code system. Although this usually isn't the case since you can still hear anybody using one if you have your privacy codes turned off, some special GMRS radios have the ability to encrypt signals so that other radios cannot pick them up.

- They could be using different radios such as a CB or PMR radio system. It is very common for a large business to use either of these two since they are less common and thus the probability of interference from other people is very low. PMR also has many benefits such as trunking, which put in simple terms is like how a cell phone works, using multiple repeaters to send a signal across the air. However, you have to be a really big corporation for this, and usually this is only reserved for companies that have people all around town, the most common civilian type being a shipping service (UPS, FedEx). Obviously CB and PMR use different frequencies, so you can't pick them up with a GMRS radio.

- While scanning, you could just be missing their transmissions, or they just have nothing to say. It depends on the radio, but scanning a single channel twice can take around 4-10 seconds, and a good amount of information can be passed by while your radio is off scanning other channels.

It all depends on the company as to what type of radio they use and how often they would be using it. FRS would be used for a grocery store sized company, CB for a Walmart size, and a PMR for a really big or widespread company. GMRS is almost never used because by law, every person who uses it must obtain a $75 license or takes the risk of being fined. You can't get a license in GMRS for an entity that would cover every individual. Every person has to get one. CB doesn't require a license, and with PMR you can get a license for an entity.

Which walkie talkie I can buy in India for personal use that has good reception, long range, and does not require any licenses?

Your only option is to go for Citizen Band Radio (27Mhz) in India. Search for Citizen Band radio vendors. They generally have base stations and walkie talkies operating on the Citizen Band Frequency range. Note that these sets can only transmit at 5W power, which gives you a coverage of around 4-6kms (may even go down based on the terrain etc.).
