Positive Ana Speckled Pattern Titre 1280

I have an ANA test of 1250 but peripheral and speckled are negative. Could this be a false positive?

Peripheral and speckled refer to the immunofluorescent pattern in a positive ANA. Lupus is usually speckled.

10 million Americans have a positive ANA, but only 1.5 million have lupus. You could have anyone of about 100 autoimmune diseases or no disease at all. You need to see a rheumatologist. Find one at www.rheumatology.org.

ANA is a titer. That means it represents the number of times your blood must be diluted until they get a sample with no ANA (antinuclear antibodies). The numbers are usually 0,40,80,160,320,640,1280. I have never seen a 1250 before.

Can having iron deficiency cause a positive 1:640 on an ANA blood test?

No, your doctor is wrong. An ANA is a non specific test for an auto immune disease...maybe he thinks you have hemolitic anemia...hopefully not as this would be terrible. However, an ANA would not be associated with an iron deficiency, not in the least.

Your Lupus panel came back negative but that really doesn't mean too much. Really the Lupus panel is used to rule Lupus IN, not OUT. Only 30% of people with Lupus actually test positive for the Lupus panel. This is why they say that there is no specific test for Lupus. You should see the hemotologist and then ask to also be referred to a rheumatologist. If your primary care doctor balks at this suggestion, let her know that if anything occurs as a result of his lack of attention then you're attorney will be calling her (this always gets the referral, by the way). After you do this you'll have to put in a request with your insurance company to change primary care doctors, but who cares, she sounds like an idiot anyway.

Get copies of all your lab work. Ask the doctor for them (before you threaten her with a lawsuit). Have them make a copy so you can actually view the results. Approximately 5% of the population test positive for ANA even without an auto immune disease, however this is a small percentage, so odds are you have some type of auto immune disease.

Positive ANA? What could I have?

I ran my ANA twice, (one several months after the other, neither of which I was sick during), and both times it came up positive. 1 to 160 speckled
I have cold hands and feet and my limbs fall asleep very easily, and i have cataplexy-like symptoms. But they don't change color at all.
They ran a lupus panel, negative.
I don't have trouble walking and moving, although I always hurt everywhere
I crack my joints a lot, I go to a chiropractor, I feel it helps my circulation
I always have a headache, and sometimes it gets much worse. But I've never had a migraine.
I went to the neurologist and they ran an eeg, nothing found.
My bloods are fine, I'm not anemic or have diabetes or anything....Nothing but the positive ANA
I see a rheumatologist again soon, hope to find results....but in the meantime I'd love some possibilities.....if anyone knows....so please help?
what could I have? What are the symptoms of that? suggestions?
Thanks!

Does a positive ANA necessairly mean Lupus?

Hello! I have been dealing with a slew of medical issues only to recently have a positive ANA test. My doctor says not to worry quite yet, but it's a little hard not to! She referred me to a Rhematologist but was wondering if anyone knew the odds of having a positive ANA and a positive Lupus diagnosis.

My ANA level is high? Indicating Lupus?

Hi, there are many websites with responsible information about lupus. The best advice was given to you by your doctor. You need to make an appt. w/a Rheumatologist. A high ANA count is only one symptom of lupus and you need to be counseled and assessed about the rest. There is a group on Yahoo groups "lupusohana" that just posted the American College of Rheumatology listing of Basic symptoms that may help give you an idea.

Lupus patients also have many overlapping conditions like arthrits and fibromyalgia. Pain, fatigue - chronic illness is not something that is easily understood by most.

On the up side, there are many people that manage quite well and are fine. That's why there are support groups. Patients are on both sides of the spectrum and in between need support.

You are not even close to being diagnosed yet, but it's great that you are learning about your possibilities. Don't be depressed or jump to conclusions. Just visit the Rheum and have your tests done. There are more that need to be done.

Good luck and we are here for you. :)
