Pre-calc Homework Questions

A Pre- Calculus homework question?

y = ae^(bx)

y is number of bugs at any time

a is intial number of bugs

when x = 3 weeks, y = 2880

2880 = ae^(3b)----------(1)

when x = 5, y = 5120

5120 = ae^(5b)----------(2)

5120 /2880 = e^(5b) /e^(3b)

=> e^(2b) = 16/9

2b = ln(16/9)

b = 1/2ln(16/9)

= ln(16/9)^1/2

b = ln(4/3)

substitute in eqn (1)

2880 = a e^(3ln(4/3))

2880 = a e^[ln(4/3)^3 ]

2880 = a (64/27)

a = (2880)(27 /64)

= 1215

Initially there were 1215 bugs

I have another question for my pre-calculus homework.?

We are working on parallel and perpendicular linear functions.

The question I have trouble with is as follows:
Are the lines perpendicular? Parallel? Neither?

9) y = 5x - 7; y = 5x + 8

I know we can use the formula of y = mx + b, but how can I use this formula if I don't know what to substitute?

***Please do not give me the answer to the problem, just where I need to begin on it.***

Thanks!

Pre-Calc Homework Question?

Compute the first seven terms of this sequence whose nth term is:

an=1/square root 5(1+sqrt5/2)^n - 1/sqrt5(1-sqrt5/2)^n

This would read as: a sub n equals 1 over the square root of 5 * (1+ square root of 5 over 2) to the nth power, minus 1 over square root of 5 * (1 minus square root of 5 over 2) to the nth power.

If you could please explain and show the steps, it would be much appreciated!

Pre-Calc homework question: Find the exact value of tan2x if cotx=-6 and (3pi/2)

I was out for a week with the flu, and I was catching up on my missed homework and I have no idea what this question is even asking. An explanation of how you got to your answer and what the question even means (well, I guess it's not really a question and is more of a demand, but I don't think that matters lol).

Also, I'm pretty sure this is understood, but "3pi/2" and "2pi" are radians.. I just don't have a pi key on my keyboard.

Thanks!

Pre-Calc Homework Help?

I have problem finding the answer to this problem:

-Jake stores a small cache of 4-inch diameter snowballs in the basement freezer, unaware that the freezer's self-defrosting feature will cause each snowball to lose about 1 cubic inch of volume every 40 days. He remember them a year later (call it 360 days) and goes to retrieve them. What is their diameter then?

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. I think it's a question about chance but I am not sure. Please help.

How do I solve this homework question-related rates-calculus?

This is a fairly standard related rates problem. Here are my four steps to solving this type of problem:1) Identify quantities (variables) of interest that are changing with respect to time.2) Write an equation expressing the relationship between these non-time variables. (Be careful not to confuse constants with values of the variables at a particular time.)3) Use the chain rule to take the derivative of that equation with respect to time.4) Use the given information, plus the relationship established in step 2, to substitute and solve for the quantity of interest.Just to get you started... In this problem, the 12' is constant. The non-time quantities that are changing include the length of the rope (I'll call it l) and the distance from the boat to the base of the dock (call it x). In part (A) we are interested in the speed of the boat [math]\left( \frac {dx}{dt} \right)[/math]; in part (B) we are interested in the speed of the rope [math]\left( \frac {dl}{dt} \right)[/math].

Question concerning mileage. Pre-calc Homework Help.?

Assume she is flying due east (+X direction) for 1.5 hours...therefore she has travelled 975 miles. Hence you have a vector A = 975i + 0j units long. Then she deviates from east by 10 degree and travels for 2 hours = 1300 miles or Vector B = 1300*cos10i - 1300*sinj, which is B = 1280.25i - 225.74j.....Add vectors A and B to get

Resultant = 975i + 0j + 1280.25i - 225.74j = 2255.25i - 225.74j...then take the magnitude of this vector and you get your solution.
Note: i and j are the unit vectors for X and Y coordinates.

Pre-calculus homework help?

The one complete revolution by earth around sun is equal to 1 year.

1 complete revolution = 2π r = 2π (93,000,000) miles

so in 365 days (1 year) distance traveled = 2π (93,000,000) miles

but 365 days = 365*24*60*60 seconds

in 1 second distance traveled = 2π (93,000,000) / (365*24*60*60)

= 18.529 miles / second

Pre-Calculus Homework Help?

I've been trying to do my homework, however, I got stuck at a question. We are learning about degrees and radians if that helps. Here is the question:

Two Coast Guard patrol boats leave Cape May at the same time. one travels with a bearing of 42˚30' and the other with a bearing of 52˚12'. IF they travel at the same speed, approximately how far apart will they be when they are 25 statute miles from Cape May?

I have no idea how to answer this question. Please help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
