Napoleon’s main goal was to build a European empire, and the most good he saw in Louisiana was selling it to raise money for his conquests in Europe.Think what you would do if you were Napoleon. You want to build a European empire, and your wars have gotten costly. You’re looking for an easy way to make money. The USA comes towards you, and offers to buy the port of New Orleans. You don’t have much of a use for Louisiana since the real American prize, Haiti, has been lost and all Louisiana was really good for was feeding Haiti.If you don’t sell New Orleans the USA might later try and take it by force. That would mean you’d lose Louisiana for nothing, or you’d have to send troops and spend money on protecting it, instead of sending those around Europe.So what’d be the best course of action? Try and sell all of Louisiana. You don’t have much of a use for it, and it looks like you’ll lose it in the long run anyways. Why not sell it now, and use the money you get from that to spend it on something you really want? Between that and at best losing Louisiana for nothing it’d be in your best interests to sell it.
