Proposed Changes To The Nhl Rules

Which sport has the most changes in possession?

Sports like football, rugby, tennis, and even basketball are pretty much out for being near the top, but what about soccer, lacrosse, or hockey. Which has the most changed in possession per game? Also, is there any other sport that I forgot that might be above these sports in changes of possession?

How would you change the rules of hockey to make the sport more exciting to watch?

It is already the fastest paced sport played by humans. No rule changes are needed to improve the game, the problem is that the current rules are enforced erratically and the ice surface for the NHL game is too small. Most people who don’t follow the sport aren’t aware that NHL ice surfaces are 15 feet narrower than Olympic rinks. The game played in the NHL goes through phases where lax officiating leads to what Mario Lemieux once called a “garage league” because of all the clutching and grabbing that was tolerated, and then reverts back to tighter officiating, less clutching and grabbing and a better game. The permanent solution is to widen the rink to Olympic standards. It’s easier for a defenseman on an NHL rink to force a skilled winger to the boards because the rink’s 15 feet narrower. Add those 15 feet of ice surface and the game would see more scoring, more passing and less of the mucking and grinding in the corners that takes away from the game. The problem with this solution is that those 15 feet probably represent around three rows of premium ice level seating and the owners don’t want to hear anything about taking money from them. Some franchises in the NHL are struggling because they are in southern US cities and don’t have the fan base to support the team as it is. Things are improving somewhat, in cities that once struggled to fill the arena are now seeing improved attendance, youth leagues and the infrastructure of rinks to support a the hockey fans sell out the arenas, towns like Nashville and Washington.Yet, there are still teams playing in places that seem like they’ll never appreciate the local franchise, such as Miami and Phoenix. To me these franchises are wasted on those towns.

NHL Team Change Jersey in Middle of game Rule?

You must declare your choice of Jersey (sweater actually in hockey terms) prior to the game, if other than the league stipulated home away uniforms. Any violation of this rule will result in a bench penalty to the violating team.
The rule is similar to a player changing numbers during a game. The lineup and uniforms must be declared before the game and adhered to.

How have rule changes in the NHL throughout the years affected competitive balance within the league?

If you're thinking about on-ice rules, there aren't any that are going to make a difference in parity among the teams.Off the ice, there's no doubt that the salary cap has brought significant “competitive balance” to the league. It is nearly impossible to build a long term dynasty when you can't keep the same players together. That's why you have small market teams (Columbus, Vegas, Winnipeg) in the playoffs this year instead of the Rangers, the Blackhawks, or the Habs (Montreal is geographically a small market, but there is so much of a fan base relative to other teams, they would have the money to make a dynasty if the cap weren't there).Interesting analysis here (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&...) from ESPN on how teams have managed (or failed) in the salary cap era.

Has there been a recent change in NHL rules that disadvantages "wraparound" goals?

Goalies are bigger than they used to be, and more nimble.  With the butterfly style of goaltending, goalies are also rarely flopping around the ice.  They tend to be on their knees, in position to push one direction or another.  This makes it much more likely the goalie is covering the post, and wraparounds are less likely to succeed.  There have been no rule changes recently that discourage them.

Nhl rules?

last night i was watched the dallas stars vs nashville match. in the third period, two stars players were in the penalty box and still there were 4 players and the goalie on the ice. so that makes it 7. how is that possible?
new to the sport.

If you could change one rule in hockey, what would it be and why?

I assume you mean the real hockey; ice hockey. For spectator hockey like the NHL and other minor leagues, the penalty for accidentally putting the puck out of play over the boards is just stupid. Referees use discretion for all sorts of other calls; let then use it there too.In amateur and recreational hockey, all minor penalties should be penalty shots instead of time served. It is stupid to make innocent players sit out while their teammate serves a penalty. Ice time is too expensive for that. Major penalties could be time served or multiple penalty shots or combinations.
