Questions Regarding Taking A Gap Year From College

Thinking about taking a gap year between community college and university?

I am going to community college for two years to get the basics and adjust to college life, and then I am thinking about taking a gap year before going to Mississippi State for 4 years or so and then apply for MSU's vet school. There are several reasons I think I would benefit from a gap year: 1) I would like a year to get things sorted out, like moving to Starkville from my hometown (I only live like 30 minutes from the community college, so moving three hours away will be a big change for me) 2) A gap year would give me lots of time to get experience working in vet clinics and making sure that is what I want to major in (I am working on volunteering in a local animal shelter to get a start) 3) If I wait a year, I will be able to be exempt from the freshmen housing requirements that make you live on-campus for the first year. I know living on-campus would be beneficial, but an apartment seems much more suited for me for many reasons.
Should I think about taking a gap year? Any advice regarding college is greatly appreciated. :) thanks!

Taking a "gap" year before college?

Weirdly opposite you, every person I know who has taken a gap year--intending for it to be a gap year--has gone to college. Most after only one year, but a few took two years before they went.
That's different from the people I know who simply didn't have a plan. Not having a plan is different from planning on having a gap year.

Meanwhile, I just finished my undergrad and have my bachelor's degree now, and everyone I know is either done with school or going straight to graduate school to get higher degrees. What am I doing? Taking a gap year! Well, I'm intentionally taking two years instead of one, but I WILL be going back.

Why am I taking time off? Because I don't know what I want to do. I had a basic idea when I started undergrad, but I changed my mind and have had many goals during the four years I was in college. But I realize that, while I'll know eventually, I don't know YET what I want to do. And there's no reason to go without having a goal in mind, although it IS true that undergrad and grad work VERY differently, what with undergrad having undeclared programs and such.

But just like how gap years work after high school, I'm working while I explore my interests and options. I'm making money and saving for my future--but also for future schooling. Paying for an education that's not directed towards a specific goal is, more or less, really stupid. And I can say that confidently, because that's EXACTLY what *I* did.

Let him take his year and don't hold it against him. You don't know yet if he'll never go back! If in a few months he's not making any headway and hasn't started looking into his options/interests, then maybe nudge him in the right direction. But also remember that, ultimately, it's his life and he gets to make his own decisions. By all means, be there to encourage him, but also remember to support him, even if you don't agree with his decisions.

Is it ok to take a gap year before joining a college?

Thanks for A2A…OK..First of all,yes its okay to take a gap year before joining somewhere, but there are conditions that you have to fulfill1)Can you do better the next year?2) How productive are you going to be?3)By how much can you boost your performance?4)Being confident that you can be at a better place if this time period is allotted to youIf (you can actually answer or at least make a solid full proof plan,on how you are going to use this year gap){console.log(“go for the gap”);}else if ( doubts on it){console.log(“clarify and make up your mind”);}else{console.log(“No,I am happy with what i have right now”,lets not take a chance”);}Summary:Make up your mind right now, think hard ask for suggestions but you have to make your own,and never regret later because its your life and things don’t turn up to be as it is supposed to,so go ahead put on your thinking hats and make a wise decisiongoodluck!!!

Should i take a gap year before going to college?

I was thinking of taking a gap year as well, but honestly, unless you REALLY think you are gonna go for sure after a year, I don't think it's too great of an idea. I mean I hear you on the "wanting to do things before college and rensponsibilities", cuz shoot I STILL want to do that lol. And alot of my friends are taking gap years as well. But are they for sure going to go when the next fall semester starts? Or are they gonna keep putting it off for the next year and the next? Just do what you feel you really will be able to stick with. Even though you're in college doesnt mean you wont get to travel. We get big breaks during college, and you can take a summer off and only go in the Fall and Spring! Plus, if you have a job and plan on traveling with that money, what money are you gonna use for college? Unless you are getting financial aid and stuff which is what I did, but just think realistically. Make sure you are prepared and are ready and dont set yourself up for failure.

Is it good to take a gap year for admission to a regular college?

The extra year of maturity always helps. The best students I ever had in a freshman class were returning Vietnam vets. They had the maturity to do the work, and the discipline to carry through. By contrast, the baby 18/year olds in the same classes were just nimcompoops. But requiring a gap year? Are you nuts? Many students, besides war vets, arrive at college with the maturity to do well. It’s just not that hard. Do your homework first: That’s all there is to it. Do the homework first. Go to class. Get some sleep. That’s all. Gap year? Are you crazy? Why waste a good brain when it can be learning stuff? No. The gap year is appropriate for immature 18 year olds, but it’s not universally appropriate. Lots of students don’t need it.

Should I take a gap year before college?

I'm thinking about taking a year off before I start college. I'm a senior, so I have to decide soon.

I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I'm interested in a lot of things and can't narrow it down, and I really think if I took a year off to work and volunteer it would help. I'll also be able to save up money to pay for college. I'm responsible and I don't plan to sit at home doing nothing for a year.

I'm a little bit worried I won't want to go back to school afterwards, but from what I've heard most people who take a gap year don't have a problem with that. I've already been accepted to college and can defer enrollment. I know it varies and I'll have to check with the school, but in general, how does it work with scholarships? They offered me a lot of money, and I'd hate to lose that.

So should I take a gap year or not? What are the pros and cons?

Should I take a gap year before college?

Pro: You will have more life experience to figure out what you want to do instead of jumping straight into college without a clue, you will have more time to think about your future, you might get the chance to travel, you can try out different jobs, etc.

Cons: You might not want to return to school, you might not be able to find work for the entire “gap”, you might waste a year trying to figure out things and get a late start, etc.

I personally wouldn’t recommend taking a gap. A lot of people never go back. Your first two years of college are devoted to the general ed curriculum anyway, it’s not like you need to figure everything out immediately. The beauty of college is you don’t have to jump in full force right away. You don’t have to take 5 classes your first semester. You can take 1 or 2 classes giving you time to do other things as well.
