What does the quote "Do the time don't let the time do you" mean?

Whatever the situation may be like jail or marriage or friendship or can even be applied to being in school, being anywhere you may not be happy in the situation with, I think it's a very complicated small sentence with lot's of meaning. I think it means "Being as your in this situation and are there unhappily, make the best of it", like for instance being in jail, instead of wasting time thinking about getting even or just thinking about getting out to re-do whatever you think you can do and get away with illegally, or getting even, don't keep thinking that way and continue your time there in drugs or being lazy, why not take the time to learn something, like the law or whatever, so that when your out, you can apply it to getting a job or being a good citizen", OR, let's say an unhappy marriage, and you don't believe in divorce and you have kids, you have to try to think of ways to be happy with the person you've chosen, for your kids sake and for your own sake, if you keep dwelling on what you think that you could have had, you won't ever be happy with what you've got, nothing is ever just Black and White, some people have to learn to be happy with what they have, even if it's a lot less than others, it's may not feel fair, but "we all have to find a way to be happy and make the best of that time, don't let the unhappiness control you, you have to work at it."We have one life and there's no do-over's once it's lived and gone, it's our legacy.
