Registering An Old Us Car In Ontario

In California, can a 17 year old register a car in their name?

A juvenile cannot enter into a contract so thus cannot be a sole owner of a motor vehicle. A minor cannot normally actually own property. His or her parents technically own that property.

If a parent will co-sign on a loan for a car, the juvenile can buy a car, but the parent will be the legal owner...

You will also need a parent or guardian to sign on any legal documents such as a title to a car or an insurance policy.

Most insurance companies will not allow you to sign by yourself on a policy until you are 18 and considered an adult.

So the insurance policy may be in your own name at 17 but with the consent of an adult since they may be held liable for your actions as a minor if you fail to fulfill your obligations.

Can I drive a US registered car in Ontario, Canada?

Depends on the driver’s residency status in Canada. Strictly speaking, a Canadian resident is not permitted to drive a US registered vehicle in Canada which has not been properly imported by the owner. This is a safety, customs and excise issue; Canada wants to ensure that vehicles that are being operated on Canadian roads meet Canadian safety standards and that import duties and taxes have been paid. That said, the circumstances will matter on whether the law is enforced should a driver be stopped by the police or at the border.US residents temporarily in Canada may operate their US registered vehicle while they are in Canada without issue for up to 12 months provided they have adequate third party liability coverage. The Ontario minimum requirement is $200,000 CAD; much higher than most US state’s minimum coverage requirements.See: Understanding Automobile Insurance - OntarioSee: Memorandum D19-12-1 - Importation of Vehicles - CBSA. This is a long document; read carefully.

How do the police know if your registration sticker is expired?

They ask you do you know that your registration is expired?Okay, seriously, most states have a tag on the license plate that indicates the month and sometimes the year that it expires. This is the last day of that month - perhaps more correctly said, the first day of the following month indicated on that little tag. Many are color specific for a particular year. The month is usually indicated also. Say green is the currently issued color for 2018 but yellow is still good if the month indicated on that tag hasn't come and gone. That works great for say Missouri plates in Missouri. Missouri plates in Iowa are perhaps a bit more difficult to determine whether they are still valid, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. And police tend to know what a valid registration tag from a neighboring state plate looks like…the police aren't as dumb as some people think.

How old do you have to be to test-drive a car?

First you must be a serious buyer. They don't waste their time with joy rides. Second you need to be 18 or over, the age at which you can legally enter into a contract, or have someone 18 or over accompany you who would be a co-signer of the contract if you did purchase a car.

That is how the sales person earns a living, and they don't appreciate people who waste their time and keep them from a customer that will buy a car.

What is the demerit point system and infractions?

You forgot to mention what state you're in and how old you are and how long you've held what class of licence. That stuff all matters.

Demerit points are basically naughty-naughty points that count against you for a few years. If you build up enough of them within a two or three year (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter) period, your licence will be temporarily suspended.

Points are assigned for convictions, with the little offences (seat belt, improper turn, etc.) generating 1 or 2 points and the big offences (racing, violating licence conditions, etc) generating much more than that. Each state has its own list and specific actions taken for drivers who accumulate points, and it would be impossible to list each state's exact schedule in one answer.

Can I buy property in New Hampshire, register my car there, and live in Nevada?

You are right that New Hampshire doesn’t require you to carry car insurance. However, they do require you to pay out of your own pocket for damage you cause with your car if you don’t have insurance. If you have set up permanent residence in Nevada by living and working there and you don’t have proper insurance and you get into an at fault accident, you may be up shit creek in more ways than one.If you have a loan on your car, your loan company will require that you have insurance and will buy insurance to protect their investment - not you - if you don’t have the required insurance coverage. They will charge that premium to you and repossess your car if you don’t pay the premium.Insurance isn’t that expensive compared to an accident you are going to have to pay for, buy it.Can you do it? Yes.Should you do it? No.Is it legal? Probably not. Will you end up on the short end of the financial stick if you have an accident? Probably yes.

How do you get your new registration stick to stick on your license plate in cold weather?

If you have extreme cold, you may have to remove the plate and take it n the house to warm up. Once it reaches room temperature, remove any old stickers, then apply to the warm plate. Once you're sure it's well attached, put the plate back on the car.

What does "safetied" and "e-test" mean for vehicles in Ontario?

e-test i believe is making sure it meets the environmental standards. If not I don't think you can legally drive it. I believe an e-test goes for around $40ish. Safetied i would just be guessing makes sure it is not unsafe to drive.

Yes you can buy cars that havn't been tested but I dont think you can drive them until they are so if you buy one and it wont pass could be a large cost to get it to pass.
