Scoliosis Is Acting Up.

Is Scoliosis a "fake" condition?

I have Scoliosis and I used to see a Chiropractor once a month for it, I felt it helped alot and I did seem to stand a little straighter, problem is my mother is a whack job and banned me from going, we had huge fights about it, she said it was a waste of time, it was attention seeking behaviour, I had Munchhausen's etc
She also had a wobbly in the car park and now I'm too embarrassed to ever go back.

She also said Scoliosis is caused by being lazy and not standing up straight, Is this true?
Are there any exercises I can do to help me stand up straighter?
I also have osteophytes from it, so I'm thinking I couldn't have faked those.

Scoliosis is acting up.?

i usually get a jolt of pain or something more like an electric shock sensation when my spine cracks. It seems that the cracking occurs when a vertebra slides into a different position, which could either be from the vertebra slipping out of its normal position or back to its normal position. The radiating pain occurs when the nerve root that emerges from the spine gets compressed or pinched when the vertebra shifts.

Can you have slight scoliosis to be in the WWE?

I don't know about the WWE, but most curves under 20 degrees are considered normal and don't cause any problems...you start getting over that point though, and they will monitor it much more closely.

What is it like after scoliosis surgery?

How many metal rods do they put in you? Does it hurt? If so does the pain stop? Can you bend forwards? Can you bend backwards? Can you bend sideways? Can you twist your back? Do you feel the rods even months after the surgery? Do you regret the surgery? Do you have any physical limitation that you didn't have before the surgery?

Please answer these the best you can. Thank you.

Can you get the rod taken out after scoliosis surgery?

There are three main categories of scoliosis treatment: observation, bracing, and surgery. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form of scoliosis. If the curve is small when first diagnosed, it can be observed with routine x-rays and measurements. If the curve stays below 25 degrees, no other treatment is needed. If the curve is between 25-40 degrees, a brace may be recommended. If the curve is greater than 40 degrees, then surgery may be recommended. If the curve is greater than 40 degrees, it is likely to continue to get worse by 1-2 degrees each year. If this is not prevented, the you 'll eventually be at risk for heart or lung problems and problems carrying a pregnancy.

Talk with you spine surgeon about you concerns, the risks, and the benefits. You can have your hardware removed, but only if it is causing a problem. It is harder to get it out than in.

I have scoliosis. I was fused 23 years ago. I am a nurse with 16 years of experience in the operating room. With the knowledge I have from personal experience and professional training, I will not have a problem saying yes to the surgeons if (when?) my girls were to develop scoliosis and need this.

Medical Certificate for becoming a pilot?

As long as you can still manipulate the controls, you're fine. You'll need to mention the operation during the medical exam and you may need a note from a doctor certifying that your freedom of movement is not significantly affected, but that's it. Generally speaking, if you can drive a car, you can also pilot a plane. The movements required are simple and not extreme, and shouldn't be affected at all by spinal fusions or other surgical treatments for scoliosis.

Can you improve a moderate lumber scoliosis with stretching and exercise?

I have never seen anyone correct scoliosis with exercises alone, not that it couldn’t be done.If it developed 10 years ago (depending on your age) it is most likely NOT idiopathic. I have corrected scoliosis in older patients who were diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis early in life in as little as five treatments. There are very specific and complicated muscular biomechanical interactions throughout the entire body which are responsible for the development of scoliosis. Just as an example, on the convex side of the upper thoracic curvature the contraction of the intercostal muscles are inhibited by the contracture of the erector spinae muscles which have attachments to the same ribs. Simply laterally bending to the side of convexity does not relieve the contracture of these muscles. Therefore, after returning to an upright posture, the contraction of the intercostal muscles is still inhibited. In fact, if a lumbar concavity exists on the same side as the thoracic convexity, lateral bending to the side of the thoracic convexity will only increase the lumbar concavity and BOTH curves will worsen. Hence, after 10 years, your attempts to self-correct have failed. That being said, there is hope. This year I am training doctors in Germany to correct scoliosis like yours. Within two years I expect to have doctors in America also trained in the method to quickly, efficiently, and affordably treat patients with this potentially life-threatening and debilitating disease.

Why don't I act loopy after surgery?

Depending on the anesthetics used during a surgery, personal tolerance to various drugs, and other exposure to some of the type of drugs used during anesthesia would effect if you feel "loopy" and experience anterograde amnesia. Also typically dentists won't use the same aesthetics when removing wisdom teeth compaired to general anesthesia so it would not be likely anyone would have significant effects once the drugs started to wear off. If you have taken benzodiazepines (eg., Xanax (alprazolam), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Rivotril/Klonopin (clonazepam), Restoril (temazepam)), barbiturates like phenobarbital or Fioricet, or other drugs like Soma, Miltown, choral hydrate, or if you are a moderate to heavy drinker then you would likely have some tolerance to some of the amnesiac effects people often experience. Even if you have not you may have a naturally high tolerance to the types of drugs that cause amnesia.

The fact you are a "quiet person in general" really plays no role in how you will respond to anesthesia.

I remember the first time I had surgery and about 20 min before being taken in to the operating room I was given an IV premedication to help me relax. Most likely it was Versed (midazolam), a benzodiazepine commonly used as a premedication that is well known to have a high incidence of causing anterograde amnesia. Under a minute after the anesthesiologist gave the injection from then until I woke up I remembered nothing even though I was told I was awake.

On my next surgery all the premedication did was to calm me down but I remembered everything.

Remember drugs effect everyone differently, actually there are people who become agitated, irritable, and even self destructive when given sedatives. Just because you were not loopy and did not have amnesia means essentially nothing. And it is not accurate that everyone is loopy and has amnesia, you are judging yourself by inaccurate information.
