Should I Become Vegetarian

Should I become a vegetarian?

I am 17 (turning 18 in december), and am 5 ft 3 in, and weigh 115 lbs. I have considered becoming a vegetarian before but my mom told me that I am still growing and need the protein. I'm not trying to diet as I know I am at a healthy weight, but I'm graduating in 2014 and was thinking about trying it out in college. I've never really liked the taste of meat, and it would be for moral reasons too. What are the health benefits and consequences from being vegetarian? Thanks! :)

Should I become a vegetarian?

LOL Big Jebb, that's not true.

If practiced correctly (meaning pretty much regular eating without excessive garbage) then you live a perfectly healthy life.

Remember;

Fruit
Vegetables
Legumes
Grains
Water

Eat that everyday, or mostly everyday, and you'll be fine. Substitutes are fine, just don't eat too much of the processed junk. I personally started cutting them out completely.

Supplements are not needed, but I recommend it to every beginner until they learned to eat nicely. I personally don't take supplements. You really shouldn't need them.

Should I become a vegetarian?

***PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU ANSWER***

i recently watched the movie food inc, and i have to say that it inspired me to start to watch what i eat. i am very slim, but i dont eat particularly healthy. however, even before the movie i bought organic products (including meat and poultry), but after seeing inside the slaughter house, i dont know if i can trust any meat company!! the animals are handled with such cruelty, and im sure that most of the meat i DO eat contains all sorts of things that are bad for me. but im torn. because:
a) i loveee meat, chicken, fish etc.
and b) im pretty skinny! idk if i can afford to cut meat out of my diet..
so what does everybody think???
vegetarians/vegans i want your opinions too!

Should I become a vegetarian?

Depending on what else you eat, from that description, I'd say you're already a veggie by default! I went veggie nearly 13 years ago, and it was down to putting myself on a trial run for two weeks to see if I could do it. Half way through I ate one marshmallow. 'Not a big deal, it's just a tiny amount of gelatine' I thought. I ended up having the worst nightmare of my life, that I still remember vividly. In it a butcher told me that if I was going to eat meat, then I would have to kill the animal myself, which I replied 'fair enough' as he handed me a meat cleaver. I was chasing a piglet whilst trying to hit it with my knife, the squeals were deafening and the white walls were turning red.  I managed to whack the cleaver into the back of the piglet, who turned around but was actually my dog. Hasten to add, I woke up in a cold sweat, ran downstairs to hug my dog at 2am (which he was not pleased at all), and vowed that I would never eat meat again because I cannot kill an animal and it would be hypocritical of me to do otherwise.Turns out, going veggie was a life changing moment that has allowed me to see all animals and wildlife in a different life which led to a career and lifestyle change. I saw a film from inside a slaughterhouse, and the slaughterman laughed and said 'I'm being paid to murder', to which he laughed again, realised what he said and asked for it to be cut. You've already been an unexpected veggie for a while, sit down and ask if you feel healthier? Do you feel less 'guilty'? And if there are any meats that you think you'll miss? I felt healthier within a couple of weeks; I felt as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders; and I wrote down what meats I thought I'd miss (I was a big meat eater, so black pudding was on the list), and if I could live without them. Turns out I could, and I am. If it disturbed you that much, I don't know why you would go back to eating meat.

Should I become full vegetarian? 13 years old?

Just educate yourself about vegetarianism. As long as you know what you're doing then you'll be fine. I went vegetarian when I was 12 and honestly it's pretty easy. You just have to be willing to try new foods and explore your options.
Being vegetarian doesn't stunt your growth. I haven't growth since I was about 13, but that was just me. I have a friend whose been a vegetarian since she was 9 and she's about 5'6''.
As long as you receive the nutrients you need you will look fine. Actually you'll probably look healthier. After I went vegetarian I noticed that my hair looked shinier, my nails looked stronger, and I lost a couple pounds.
If your parents are still worried, try following the vegetarian food pyramid for a while: http://www.vegetariannutrition.org/food-pyramid.pdf
Hope that helps :)

Should I become a vegan or just a vegetarian?

You should go vegan - saturated animal fats found in meat and dairy products pile on the poiunds and also increase your risk of cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. A varied and balanced vegan diet is low in fat, high in nutrients and will boost your energy and fitness.

A considerable body of evidence suggests that a well balanced vegan diet is an optimum vehicle for the promotion of human health.

Contrary to believe you dont have to obsess that you re getting enough protein-excess protein consumption can lead to serious health problems and aslong as you are eating a varied diet you will be getting enough. In fact its very rare in the western world for people to be deficient in protein.

Dairy products have also been linked to juvenille-onset diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma and prostate, breast and ovarian cancers.

Eggs also contain saturated fat and are particularly high in dietary cholesterol- two main causes of heart disease.

Aside from the health aspects, the dairy and egg industries are very cruel- in britain approximately 30 million day old chicks are gassed or tossed alive into giant industrial mincing machines- useless because they can not lay eggs.

Dairy cows are kept in a constant cycle of pregnancy and lactation so we can have their milk- calves are seperated from their mothers causing great distress to both and male calves who are often unprofitable are either shot soon after birth or raised for veal.

These practices happen whether at a factory or organic farm so good reason not to support animal farming at all.

Goodluck- for your health and also that of the animals :)

Should i become vegetarian just to impress a girl?

No. If she judges you based on you eating meat than you need to keep away from her.

Should we all stop eating meat and become vegetarian?

First of all, you don’t need to go vegan to stop eating meat.Ever heard of vegetarianism? Now for the “Should humans [as in all of us] stop eating meat” part - no, I don’t believe in that. If we reduced our consumption by, say, 50%, we could get some pretty big changes in the industry and be rid of factory farming and the horrific lives animals are forced to live in order to feed us.This is a goal which is achievable and sustainable. Reduce, not forbid. We need animals for food production, we need cattle for grazing. We need grass for the biodiversity of life of several types of land.Aboltionist veganism is absurd. It makes no sense and it only exists in books and blog posts. It would never work in real life. We need balance in our food production and consumption. Extinguishing the raising of livestock alltogether is not an option. Can we all live without eating meat? Yes. Should we forbid people to do it? No.
