Should I Get Back Into Video Games What Games Should I Get

Life: Is it bad to get deeply into video games? If so, what should be done to another that has gone this route?

Interesting question, and poses an even more existential consideration.  What is bad?  Are you asking after him because you believe he has no future?  I grew up playing lots of video games, and I still enjoy doing so when I can fit it into the rest of my life.  But I don't believe I've sacrificed my life for video games, and I haven't had to sacrifice video games for life.  I think you're asking about BALANCE.  Balance can be difficult to achieve.  When one thing or another takes over your life, it becomes out of balance.  They can be beneficial or derogatory, and can have negative or positive impacts on your overall well being.  Right now, your brother seems to have a hobby that he is fully committed to enjoying.  You may not understand, or you might, but are you're wondering right now if he's wasting time, money and effort?  I haven't met too many 18 year olds that are planning on the future, or running after making money (I've known a few...early entry military spending ALL their disposable income on penny stocks in the stock market, conducting trades, making money, trying to become an early millionaire), but the beauty of our society is that it supports all walks of life and all interests.  As long as you're not involved in illegal or oppressive activity, you generally can do what you want to do.  Right now, your brother doesn't have a lot of responsibility.  You mention he's planning to make his room video game themed, so I'm assuming he's still living at home off of your parents.  As such, he's not really supporting himself and has a lot of apparently discretionary income to put towards his hobby.  Things are comfortable at home, and the transition to self-supporting this day takes so much more.  Folks are used to having their own space, and the home lifestyle isn't oppressive, so there's more reasons to stay at home under the parental support umbrella than ever before.  Me, I didn't want to be a burden on my parents, wanted to live under my own rules, and wanted to create my own space.  Sure, I learned a lot of things the hard way, but I am very comfortable with uncertainty now.  Some folks plan out their life and live working towards those goals, others merely drift through it.  I'm pretty sure your brother will chart his own course, make his mistakes, make and progress towards his goals.  I wouldn't call it bad, or good, merely learning to navigate in this grand experiment folks call life.

How much should an 11 year old play video games?

Well, see gaming as a hobby. How much would your parents allow you to read or draw? How much time do you spent on other hobbies? And what do you need to do before you can do that hobby?I myself would usually do everything I needed to do and after that was my free time. Time which I could decide what to do. So I would read a book when I wanted to and play games when I wanted to. Not based on a time limit, just free time after I had done everything. So, if you had free time, would you spent all of it gaming? Would you play outside and then come in to draw? (Random stuff, I don’t know what you like) Whatever you choose it’s all fine if it’s in your free time.So let’s say it’s a school day, and you have school from 8:00 till 15:00. (8:00 AM 3:00 PM) Then you do whatever you need to do for 1 or 2 hours, then it’s 16:00 or 17:00. (4:00 PM 5:00 PM) Then you get free time to do whatever you want till dinner. I don’t know what time you have dinner but I have dinner at 18:00 (6:00 PM) so I would have 1 or 2 hours free time. Then after dinner you would have free time till you go to bed.All this free time is time you could game, but you could do something else as well. And you should be allowed to choose how much of your free time you can spent on games. But well, every kid works different. So research and all that stuff doesn’t exactly tell your parents how you work. And you should try to find what works for you with them.

Why do you play video games?

I play because I've just loved the experience of being able to control a character and solve puzzles. I started with the Legend of Zelda series and I loved how puzzle solving was a way to get through dungeons. I eventually became more intrigued by first person shooters like COD because it was such a new experience from offline play. Playing against bots is nothing. Against other players just has its own rewards. Mostly about sense of accomplishment. There's a wide variety of games a lot have some really good back stories. I usually see single player games as a book that can be seen in the first person perspective and you control the actions such as in the Mass Effect series. Leveling in multiplayer games gives people a sense of accomplishment and unlocking different parts of the game makes it that much more fun.

Why dont i like video games anymore?

It feels like all the 360 games are just first-person shooters... and I'm not too fond of that genre either.

Maybe you just grew out of gaming? Weird thing is you *want* to like it again. Maybe you're just jaded by the abundance of similar titles and the games that don't live up to the hype. Find something that interests you a bit, and actually try to complete the game. It is far too easy today to shrug off a title the moment you're bored...

What courses should i take for video game design or to get into the video game industry?

I've read several articles about video game design (my dream job) but they all say is that i just need a random degree and than get in and work to the top. Yeah that sounds great and all, but I want to increase my chances of taking any class that will make game companies want me even more. I wanted to go to the art institutes in las vegas. there's a game design program, but my chemistry teacher (who took multiple computer classes) told me that its more art than anything. There is also courses in UNR for Masters of Science in computer science and engineering. It's a masters degree program which seems very usefull but yeah. Please help me someone. I need the info that no one can give me. I'm a senior in high school and I know nothing about college, so please help me out. Thanks

here's the links to the programs that ive seen so far. please rate them as well if you want: http://www.unr.edu/degrees/computer-science-and-engineering/ms

Should I eliminate video games from my life?

I did eliminate games almost entirely from my life and I’m glad I did. But I might be a different person than you are.Back in High School, I used to play a lot of games, and I mean a lot. I started with strategy games, moved to shooters and then there was the time when I had LAN parties with my friends and every weekend we shot out our brains in Counter Strike 1.6. Honestly, it was really fun! Then, World of Warcraft hit me hard. When I sold my account, I’d been I guess one of the top 3 in my class on my Realm/Server and as far as I remember I had more than 120 days online time on all my characters (combined). That means I wasted roughly 1/3 of a year, not counting sleep. Raiding through the nights of course made my grades suffer, but luckily I’m not that dumb and my GPA turned out okay, or say did not interfere with my later career. After WoW, my game-time decreased and I was just playing casually. When I started my Bachelors, there were times where I just didn’t have much to do and I found myself playing some rounds every now and then and when Minecraft was released, I used to spend some evenings with my friends building houses and mines. Was fun, too!Later, I thought it’s a great idea to get an Xbox One to just come down in the evening after university. It ended up with my reasoning that I spent quite some money on that box and now I have to use it, so I bought lots of games, some , like GTA, were a blast, some were not. Then, I became an ambitious person and realised that I have to plan and spend my time wisely to reach my goals. I ended up to make my personal OKRs for Q1 2016 and “reduce gaming to x-times per week” ended up on them and I pretty much nailed that. x became equal to zero.Nowadays, whenever I turn on my Xbox, I need to wait for hours to catch up with the mandatory system updates of half a year or so. In addition, I own solemnly MacBooks, so gaming there is not really fun.The last time I played was during the recent Christmas break, when I was visiting my family, spent time with them sitting on the sofa and playing some Steam game while they were watching some sh* on TV.Tl;dr I realised that gaming is not compatible with my aspirations, I eliminated it pretty much completely and never looked back. My answer is Yes. Whether you should or need depends solemnly on you. Just like Atano already perfectly wrote here “All that matters is what you want, what makes you happy”.

I am outgrowing video games :(?

I hear that. Same things happening to me and I believe it ain't us but the quality and innovation of new games is just nose diving, no challenge anymore as mainly made for kids or drunk students (blame the Wii for that 'bringing it to the masses'). Most are just the same old thing rehashed with a new plotline and, hopefully, better graphics.

RPGs (MMO or otherwise) - tried loads of others, but WoW beats them hands down for community and depth, done it all before though with WoW so nothing new there.

Shoot em ups - COD4 is the daddy and really all the others don't bring anything new

Platformers - Can't think of a single 'best' in category but I've been going through loads, completing Batman: AA in a week. Replay to find all the hidden stuff? cba tbh. Might play some Fallout (or is this more RPG or shoot em up) again but after reaching lvl cap I lost interest. Prototype was good for a while but followed the same trend as Batman.

Strategy - all the same again.

Don't have an answer for you that's any better then already said, replay a quality game you know from years ago that won't bore you to sin. I've just finished playing KOTOR for the first time in ages, trying to get KOTOR II running on Vista atm, but thats proving impossible

I want to make video games, but I'm not artistic. What should I major/minor in?

I do agree that you can start making video games now... any kind of creative project that involves technology, design, game theory, etc. is great, and readily accessible. For a college major, there are majors that specialize in video game design, but depending on the school you attend, they do behave differently. At universities/research institutions, you might find a major in Media Arts or Interactive Technology, that isn't specifically targeted towards *game design* specifically but introduces you to a wide range of technological and artistic concepts inherent in game design. If you enjoy studying other subjects, then a liberal arts curriculum can and should enhance your experience... literature, computer science, foreign languages, management/entrepreneurship, et al, can all have an influence on your background as you go into the working world. If you want to focus specifically on areas of game design and feel like taking outside classes would not be the best use of your time, then there are schools that can prepare you as well. These schools will focus more on the technical aspects of game design, and seek to make you employable in a sector upon graduation. However, in this situation you do want to be sure that you are comfortable with the concept of "learning to learn" and are okay with seeking out your own creative curiosity and development, because that locus of control is what is going to KEEP you employed. This is actually a decent list to start with: Top Undergraduate Schools for Video Game Design. Do your research about these schools, ask questions, identify what you like/don't like. When you talk to people at these institutions, ask what other schools/programs you should look at as well. If there is a company you want to eventually work for, the big companies often have an outreach office that works with colleges... you can always contact them and ask if that company likes to hire graduates from particular schools/programs. Good luck!
