Should I Highlight/annotate My Books

How to annotate a book?

These are all different ways people annotate and some tips: (You don't have to use all of them, just pick and choose which would be best for you!)

highlight key information

use marginal notes (check marks, question marks, stars. arrows, brackets, written words and phrases) to mark key material (what is important, interesting, quotable, questionable, etc.)

Inside the front cover, keep key info with page numbers. Info can include: themes, passages related to book title, character names, important scenes, key definition/vocabulary

At the end of each chapter, BRIEFLY summarize what you've read

make a list of vocabulary words in the back of the book

On a blank page, list all characters and write notes about their: appearance, personality, history, and what others think of the character (all with page numbers)

highlight symbols, motifs, themes, characterization, literary elements, figurative language, important plot events

pick out main ideas and write summaries about them in the margins

You don't have to write in the book, you can also use sticky notes or maybe separate sheets of paper

Don't over-annotate! then, the important info won't stand out!

Should i highlight my college textbooks?

yes! definitely highlight! ive always highlighted and still sold my book back at the end of the semester. but be careful not to over highlight! you want to be able to find the most information. this way, you can go back to and read the chapter in a short amount of time getting the most out of it.

How do you annotate a book?

The way I was fought to annotate a book for my class was to look for any quote/sentence(s) that are eye catching in other words something that looks interesting or that you could explain. Once you have that you wright your quote or sentence on the left side of your paper and wright down the page number below the quote/sentence(s) and on the right side of your paper you are approximately going to wright five questions about the quote /sentence and for each questions your response should be of approximately five sentences explaining your reasoning. This should be done throughout the book hope it helps.

Best way to annotate a book?

I'm going into 10th grade this year and I have to annotate Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury AND Kaiffer Boy. I've heard that they are both pretty good, so I'm excited, but I've never annotated a book before!

Should I read the book once, then go back, read it again and annotate it the second time around? What is the best method for thorough, though not excessive annotations?

Readers: Do you mark up/highlight your books?

Not when I'm just reading a novel for fun, because I don't have any need to make notes, but when I was studying English Literature I marked up, highlighted and made notes on my set texts. We were expected to.

We were allowed to take these self-annotated texts into some of our final exams, but not separate notebooks, so we had no choice but to annotate and highlight in the books themselves.

I actually love re-reading my annotated books and I'm immensely glad I've got them. They're like a little piece of history. I like second-hand books that other people have written in, too.

Unless it's a special hardback collectable edition or an antique, I don't care what condition my books are in. Creased spines, crumpled pages, dog-eared corners, annotations - it's all good. I love, love, love books, but the important thing is that they are read and loved. The key thing about the books for me is the actual words, not the cover or the condition of the pages.

An author once signed a *very* dog-eared copy of his book for me. I apologised for its condition and he said, "Oh, that's all right. The battered copies are the best. People who get anal about keeping paperbacks pristine aren't real booklovers because it means they think the book is more important than the words."

Why should you highlight your college textbook?

You should highlight whatever is most important. Often this includes important terms, equations or concepts. What you don't want to do is go crazy and highlight entire paragraphs. Usually there will be a sentence or two that sums up the whole thing, highlight that. If it's an extremely important paragraph or section then I usually highlight the title or heading.

Annotations can save time and effort when doing a research. It allows you to better understand what you are reading and it will keep track of your reaction. One way of annotation is by highlighting the sentence or phrases that might be useful in the future research. When we do research we often encounter unfamiliar words and we tend to use a dictionary to find the meaning of this certain word. If you highlight in a used college textbook, can you still do buyback?

An A grade is much more important than how much you get for the book, especially when you consider how expensive the tuition fees are. I always highlighted my books and I graduated with nearly all A grades.
