Can I come to Social Security without an appointment?

Yes you can, but be forewarned- You should show up early, preferably before the Office opens for business, because the lines will be long.The way I do it is I get there about an hour before opening, so I get in fast. They will assign you a number once you go through check in, and Security (remember- this is a Federal Office, so do not bring weapons of any type, even a simple pocket knife!). Once your number is called, you will be directed to a window (much like you go through at a DMV) where a SSI agent will answer your questions and process your claim.

Are Saturday appointments available at Social Security offices?

Sorry, no. Social Security Field Offices are not open on Saturdays, Sundays, or Federal holidays.Part of the reason why:It increases overhead costs for utilities and security. A Field Office (which is the agency term for your local offices) is not allowed to open to the public without a security guard on site since the Oklahoma City bombing. Many large metro offices had guards prior to that time.It increases personnel costs. Employees cannot legally work more than 40 hours per week without being paid overtime or earning equivalent time off. To spread out employees to provide 6 day per week coverage would mean that there would be by necessity fewer employees available to work during the week.Budgets for overtime are frequently slashed to the bone depending on Congressional action/inaction. All Federal agencies have been working without a fixed budget since the fiscal year expired 9/30/17. When agencies work under a Continuing Resolution (which they have since that date), usually no increase in any kind of spending or hiring is permitted.Social Security offices are open at times (budget permitting) for employees to work overtime on Saturdays to catch up work that they were unable to get to during the week. Because of this, a person that has business pending with SSA could receive a phone call from SSA on a Saturday, but the office is not open for business to the general public.It’s understandable that you wouldn’t want to take off work to make a trip to SSA. I decided to just show up, take a number and wait. This may work for you too, if you have a morning or afternoon to spare. Check the hours first, though. They're probably closed on Wednesday afternoon.
