Lesson ideas for studying the works of H.P. Lovecraft...?
Impressive; I would have never imagined Lovecraft would be taught in High School. Anywho, a major theme of Lovecraft's works can be summed up in his supposition that the strongest human emotion is fear, and the strongest fear is the fear of the unknown. This "unknown" element players significantly in all his works. Sometimes to a greater effect, sometimes not. Asking students to identify instances where Lovecraft purposely keeps his horrors "unknown" and why he did so might be a valid project. And of course, towards the end of studying his works, requesting students write a short horror genre passage or story using this concept would also be prudent. One might also attempt to compare Lovecraft's paranormal horror stories (such as The Shunned House or the Outsider) with his Science Fiction ones (The Colour out of Space, The Whisperer in Darkness). Then there could be a study of how he went about creating his mythos. The main character of The Whisperer in Darkness was mentioned in The Mountains of Madness, the Necronomicon is featured widly, Cthulu and other great beings show up often, etc. And something that might be of use to students; many of Lovecraft's works are no longer protected by copyright and so they can be viewed onlike at Wikisource.
