You find a bag dropped off at your front door with $100k. There is no note or any indication of where it is from. What do you do?
Okay, I know or can guess it is $100,000. I would photograph the bag as it was when I realized it held a great deal of money. I would send the photographs to the cloud (perhaps just my email accounts).Then I would call the police.I do not have a bathroom scale and I would hesitate to move the bag much before the police arrive. But I might briefly lift the bag off the front step for a moment to memorialize the overall heft of the bag as found, and then find an equivalent weight from stuff around the house, emailing myself the collection of buckets, with height of water and other stuff that came to about about the same weight.But then, it is for the police to document as they see fit.If I had a bathroom scale, I would take pictures of the scale’s readout with me and bag and me, sans bag, and record both to the cloud.I would mention to the police that I moved the bag somewhat. I would not mention the attempt to indelibly document its weight and thus possible valuation. That is an illustration of the state of my trust in the local force.I would accept an interview request by a reporter for the local or nearest big city papers after the police make public their report of the abandoned property. I would provide them the visual documentation.
What are the problems of having rich parents?
When I was a child my parents were low-middle class. As an early teen they were getting better, and became middle-class. In my late teens they were upper class.It resulted in a few things… Overall, I didn’t get the benefit of having rich parents. I went to a regular school, didn’t get expensive things, far from it, and I got used to having a frugal life. At the same time they were getting richer I was leaving home, since they were quite abusive, psychologically.At 16 years old they got a simple and small apartment as heritage. They weren’t willing to rent it, even if they didn’t intend to live on it. And it was much closer to school and university than their house. So I convinced them to let me live in it and I would pay the bills. So while they were getting richer and richer, I was living in that apartment with roughly a minimum wage, from scholarships. So, now, more than 10 years later, I am used to a frugal lifestyle, while my mother is used to being able to spend a lot on luxuries with no worries.The problem is that she totally lost her senses on how much money regular people have access to. And on what is an unnecessary luxury.The hugest trouble occurred last year. My mother tricked me into buying a $3000 glasses. “Trick” because she doesn’t mind lying and manipulating to get whatever she feels is important. I didn’t need a new pair of glasses, much less a $3000 one. To make things worse, both me and my husband were unemployed with nearly no money in the bank. She didn’t know this, but she didn’t bother checking our financial situation or if I wanted to pay for such a luxury either. I was extremely frustrated and worried, and she got mad at me for feeling like that. She simply couldn’t fathom what was the problem with a $3000 bill for a nice pair of glasses.This story had a happy ending. I was able to secure a job in the next weeks and pay the $3000 in the next months. I had a serious conversation with my mother, because I was considering cutting ties with her, and things are better now. And, ironically, the expensive glasses ended up being of worse quality than my way cheaper one.
