Actually you would most likely do neither. Melatonin is quite non-lethal. A study was done where females took 70mg a day for 5 years, which is far above the recommended dosages and they had no ill effects. However DON'T DO THAT it will mess with ur excretory system horribly. Also Triple strength melatonin does not exist since all melatonin was created equal so Triple strength typically means 10 mg. If so that would mean 1200mg of melatonin which no one should take. It might in fact kill you since no one has been willing to take enough to find out. Essentially if you were to take melatonin it would result in a lot of suffering but probably not death although no one could really be sure. If you are thinking about doing this I can't stress enough that you shouldn't.

What would happen if you took 5 mg melatonin every night for 6 months, will your natural ability to sleep be irreparably impaired?

In young people the Pineal gland excretes just about .3 mg over the night. It is better to match that by taking 1 mg. Taking a lot more can cause insomnia and taking more does not mean it works better. The half life of a pill is about an hour or so meaning it did it’s job and is going to the kidneys to be expelled. The hormone signals the bodies organs to slow down for sleep. It is not a sleeping pill as is a narcotic. Taken early in the evening it just advances sleepyness to the earlier hour. It may be true that a pill overrides the Pineal function somewhat causing less to be secreted so when you stop taking a pill you may have difficulty sleeping for a couple days until the gland goes back to normal. This can be a reason to keep your dosage to 1 mg. In very old people Melatonin is less available and a time release 2 or 3 mg pill might be better.

What would happen if a human ate 600mg of melatonin?

It would cause severe drowsiness and a melatonin hangover the next day, but would very likely do little more than that:the LD50 is >3,200 mg/kg in rats. This does not translate directly to humans, but it does make it very unlikely that a one-time dosage of 600 mg of melatonin would cause (significant) damage to a human being with a body mass > 60 kg. Source: Melatonin (DB01065)A study gave 5 human subjects 1 g of melatonin a day and found no evidence of toxicity. Source: The effects of oral melatonin on skin color and on the release of pituitary hormones.Obviously it is not recommended to take 600 mg/day, since the therapeutic dose is in the range of 0.1 - 10 mg, and many studies have been conducted on assessing the safety of dosages within this range, whereas very few have been conducted on the safety of (much) higher doses. There also seems to be no added benefit, only added side effects (drowsiness), so there is generally no reason to increase the dose beyond 10 mg.
