Text Highlight On Quarkxpress

How long does it take to pick up Adobe InDesign if you're advanced in QuarkXPress?

Your level with other Adobe products goes a long way.

I was in the same boat as you. I had to learn lnDesign on the job. I bought a number of "From Quark to InDesign" books, but they didn't help very much. A comprehensive InDesign book is much more important.

What helped was just recreating a few Quark pieces after work in InDesign. Any time I needed to know the equivalent of a certain command or shortcut in InDesign. I'd look it up. The transition was quite smooth.

All told, I was up and running in a matter of weeks. On subsequent jobs, I've helped other designers get familiar with InDesign after using Quark exclusively for years. Learning time often ranges from a few weeks to a few months tops.

This may sound silly, but the best advice is to just dive right in. Take an old brochure, book, letterhead, whatever you've designed in Quark, and recreate it. Rinse, repeat. You'll be up and running in no time.

P.S. if you're a keystroke fanatic like me, you can do what I did, and print out a list of them to post in your work area. I highlighted my most commonly used ones, and made sure to memorize them asap.
