Trouble Losing Weight Type 1 Diabetic

How can a 13 year old TYPE 1 diabetic lose weight?

It can be hard for a diabetic to shed pounds--if for no other reason than you probably occasionally have to take in high-sugar foods to compensate for a low blood sugar.

But in other ways, you have a huge advantage. If you are preparing for a pump, you should be counting your carbs at every meal and snack. The key to losing weight is to simply burn more calories than you consume. It sounds like you probably have enough physical exercise in your schedule. If you simply eat smaller portions, avoid too many snacks, and try to eat healthy foods, you should lose weight. And because you are used to counting everything you eat, hopefully this isn't too hard to do. Just try to cut back a little from what you would normally eat.

If you have diabetes do you lose weight?

Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of diabetes but much more obvious symptoms are extreme thirst and needing to pee a lot. Before insulin was discovered people with type 1 diabetes would effectively die of starvation and they would be super thin. Check out http://clendening.kumc.edu/dc/rm/20_37pc... which shows a picture of one of the first kids to be treated with insulin before and after treatment - it's quite shocking how thin he was when he developed diabetes and it's a scary thought that so many of us would have died like that if insulin hadn't been discovered! Hope that helps xxx

Is it impossible to lose weight with diabetes type 1?

I'll be honest with you. I've been type 1 since I was 1 year old. All of my life my motto has been 'it's the quality of life not quantity'. I'm 38, have had very mild complications, a rough pregnancy and have never been a model diabetic. I enjoy food, especially carbs, and a beer. My a1c is typically a 7. It took me a very long time, 10+years, to loose the pregnancy weight but I'm now 114lbs. I do take lots of vitamins and try to work out at least 3 times a week. I'm a true believer in small portions of any crappy foods. It satisfies my craving and makes me happy too. Six small meals a day helped with the weight too.
You may also want to get your thyroid checked. It is common for type 1 diabetics to develop an under active thyroid. The blood test is called a THS.
Good luck in your search for answers.

As a type 1 diabetic, how do I stop rapid weight loss, reduce carbs or increase insulin?

Firstly manage your diabetes and achieve this by consistent blood glucose monitoring and appropriate insulin dosage.Measure blood ketones , urea and electrolytes ,lipids ,Hba1c and urine for ketones and microalbumin. You are losing weight because of poor diabetic management.Measure glucose levels first thing in the morning , before meals,2 hours after meals and occasionaly at 3 am.Hba1c is another useful measurement for assesing long term ie 3 month glucose level.Basal bolus dosages of insulin or insulin pump works best to simulate physiological homeostasis meaning that we are trying to achieve a normal glucose level as far possible without too high or too low.You are losing fat and muscle due to poor control.Take charge of your health and educate yourself as much as a diabetologist. You can even adjust your insulin dosages and occasionally indulge in what doctors would call prohibited foods.I have been general and brief because the other answers to your question elaborated on diet ,beneficial foods and exercise together with co operating with your doctor.Anecdotal reports of natural remedies are encouraging and being in possession of a glucose monitoring device will assist in choosing a remedy as Big Pharma is not in favour of natural remedies for obviuos reasons.Do not wait to get blind , heart disease, kidney failure and gangerene. If you are a male you will suffer ED and what is life without that spice.

Can Type 2 diabetes go away if you lose weight?

Read Dr. Richard Bernstein’s book Diabetes Solution. Most type 2 diabetics can benefit from a low-carb diet. The benefit is not directly from losing weight, but from reducing your need for insulin. You’re likely to lose weight also. Here is a paragraph from his Web site: “Dr. Bernstein has had diabetes for 72 years — since the age of eleven. He was trained as a management engineer and had been a business executive much of his life. In 1969, while suffering from a number of the complications of this disease and near fatal hypoglycemic episodes, he desperately sought a means for normalizing his own blood sugar. He acquired a device used in emergency rooms to measure blood sugars at night when the labs were closed. He then began to measure his blood sugar throughout the day, hoping to quantify what made it go up and down. His findings led to the development of “self-monitoring of blood glucose”, a simple procedure that uses one drop of finger-tip blood, “Basal/Bolus insulin dosing and the reintroduction of the then globally opposed low carbohydrate diet. He was the first person to reverse severe long term complications of diabetes.”

How long can a type 1 diabetic last without insulin?

Probably only a few days. The time could be maximized by not eating any carbs and by drinking plenty of carb-free fluids.

Why? WIthout insulin, your body starts burning fat. This leads to ketone body by-products and it also makes your blood more acidic. You probably have enough fat to fuel your body for awhile--it's the acidity that cna get dangerous and kill you. Not eating carbs will help to slow down the ketone body formation (although insuin is what really stops it) and drinking plenty of fluids will help your kidneys get rid of some of the acidity. It's is NOT an experiment that I recommend trying as it could get really dangerous.
