Two Opposites In Pop Culture

Two opposites in pop culture?

I wanna get a tattoo of two opposites on my wrists, I was thinking lumos and nox from harry potter but any other ideas would be appreciated something from game of thrones preferably

Which two cultures are most opposite from each other?

If I may be so bold, maybe a better wording would be: ‘Which two culture’s behaviours are most opposite from each other’. This would force the answer to ‘define’ the culture by the behaviour rather than the million things by which a ‘culture’ could otherwise be defined. Culture is just the system of rules a group imposes upon itself anyway so that we feel safe not having to reinvent the wheel of social interaction every day. This is a very human thing to do irrespective of the ‘culture’ defines about itself. So, you could argue that culture 1 fits 20 angels on the head of a pin whilst culture 2 has none, therefore THEY are most opposite (yes, this was actually argued around 400 AD at the Council of Nicea!). But frankly, so what?

What are some examples of two cultures that do/ believe opposite things?

hi
in india kids stay with their parents and obey them even if they have grand kids.
in west parents would kick their kids out by 25.
arragged marriage in india and love marriage in west.
Cristian religion has missionary that asks people to convert.Hinduism doesn't ask anyone to convert and every one is free.
cristanity says one cannot believe any other religion or any other god, where as hindusim say one can be a true hindu if he/she respects other religion

Which two cultures are the most dissimilar?

I don't think there is one culture that absolutely distinguishes or conflicts with one another, but it depends on what circumstances.Korean and Chinese are both victims of the invasion of Japan during World War 2. People in China tend to try to forgive what Japanese did during that war (Japan does not think it is an agreesive war but a reasonable defence accordingly until today), though it is hard especially with the public opinion of hatred booming domestically. But in the meantime, Japanese people will never stand a chance to be forgiven by people in Korea ( South Korea to be precise) . There are several occasions that both countries can sit down and have a talk on the war issue, but somehow it just could not be tackled.Dating back to the original reasons, it is just two totally different cultures on FORGIVENESS. Japanese hold a culture of SHAME. They will not easily claim them guilty because they will be bullied by other people for showing weakness. When it comes to Korea, Korean need to think it all over and then decide whether to forgive or not. Unfortunately, Korean dislike Japan for decades, which cause the stage where both countries are.

What is contemporary culture? (Or what would be a contemporary definition of culture?)

“Contemporary culture” is the culture of a specific society or people in modern times. For example, contemporary Malay culture is a bit like how it was 200 years ago (from art to cuisine and language, with Arab and Indian influences), but with additional influences from Britain and America. In modern (or “contemporary”) times, “culture” is usually defined as:“a set of practices done by a specific community of people”or “a distinct community of people by ancestry, descent, government, religion, or language.”

3 symbols in pop culture?

Hi Gabby,
Part of my concern with some of the previous suggestions is that they aren't all current. I suspect your teacher is looking for contemporary pop culture symbols. I'd certainly vote for Lady Gaga. She's current and one of my favorites. Great fun! Justin Bieber would be another good choice from the music world. I'd also suggest any one of several current "in" TV shows like Dexter [on Showtime] or from network TV, The Big Bang Theory. Katy Perry would be a good choice. LA Ink for tattooing. Wrist bands with shapes or for causes are a current pop culture fad. Regards.

What is hegemony in popular culture?

In my pop culture class we learned that hegemony is the basic idea that a powerful theme must be reproduced in order to be popular among different audiences. My instructor gave the example of sports movies and how the idea of hard work and dedication is reiterated. When I search for a basic definition of hegemony however it says that it is the dominance one social group has over another. Which explanation is correct?

What are some classic examples (from nature, pop culture, classic movies, classic literature, etc.) that show opposites which are complementary to each other?

If by “complementary and opposite” you mean “yin and yang,” i.e. two parts of a whole, you are suggesting that their being opposite makes them work well as a unit. Such complementary opposites are probably more obvious from the outside looking in than they are from the perspective of the opposite components trying to deal with one another. Here is a list from pop culture:Oscar and Felix from The Odd CoupleIce cream and cake (the ice cream is cold, refreshing, smooth and changeable in form from solid to fluid; the cake is dense, solid and somewhat porous)Night and Day (dark and light), both part of a 24 hour spin of our worldHeads and tails—two sides of the same coinUp and down—can’t have one without the otherLeft and right—again, one direction needs the other to make complete sense; could there a world that was only left and straight ahead? Where all things troped to the left?
