"Underground Rap" is rapping without money being the primary objective. KRS One (Bronx, New York) is one of the most infamous underground rappers of all time. KRS one famously quoted, "I'm not the run of the mill, cuz for the mill I don't run", in his his most famous song "Step Into a World". Underground rap often praises lyrical content over commercial interest and is often void of complicated beats, sticking to a simple pattern of drum and bass. Independence is central to the idea of an "Underground Rapper". Not relying on a record deal or creating your own independent record label is often a huge part of a rappers reputation. Underground hip hop's artists who have had the most success mirror the styles of their respective geographic areas, i.e. Tech N9ne having success in the Midwest, E-40 and Too Short on the West Coast, KRS One on the East Coast. Each of these examples started their respective labels.

where to start, the beauty of underground hiphop now days is that there are so many different styles certain rapper who wouldnt be out of place in the 90s (which many consider the best of hiphop) you can get other artists like immortal technique, lowkey, logic, diabolic who are very politcal in there lyrics. to rappers like Akala who are about united people. to more alternate hiphop like Atmosphere, Eyedea, Grieves who are more like poets and their songs are quite deep, philisophical etc. the main characterists that go across the board in all formats of underground hip-hop is mainly lyrics. good production values as well, but mainly lyrics above all else. a good range of vocabulary, and a very unique flow hopefully underground hiphop fans do become less narrow minded (a lot of them are fine) but all underground rap has its own unique points, but certain fans hate of alternate stuff becuase its not considered 'true' hiphop

im not old (25) but i just cant feel alot of the new hip hop music because its just alot of great beats and dance music with bad lyrics. for instance... listen to the words of duffle bag boy song..... lil wayne makes the hook very catchy but the lyrics of playa circle??!! but not just that one song really just turn on hip hop radio station and pick one.. will they ever bring back REAL LYRICAL TALENT?

I need help finding a beat to use for a rap song me and some friends are gonna make for an event. We are planning on using a beat from a previous song, but we don't want the beat to be recognized immediately by the mainstream audience. Can you please list good "underground" rap songs, any kind, some less gangster ones would be much appreciated as well! Bottom line, a really awesome beat that is not world famous mainstream.. In other words, not candy shop or 50 cent etc. Something underground hope u understand!
