For downgrading from Lollipop to KitKat, you will need a factory image of KitKat for your phone which can be flashed via fastboot mode. Usually, downgrading via recovery mode leads to a soft brick and hence fastboot is the only option. In some cases, the bootloader also gets updated when the phone is updated to Lollipop. It is risky to downgrade the bootloader back to the KitKat one as has a high chance of causing a hard brick. So, avoid flashing the boot partition back to the old one.Getting a stock fastboot rom can be a bit tough for unpopular devices. So, I suggest you look around for firmware and device specific instructions on Google or xda-developers forum. Downgrading is a risky process and can lead to soft/hard bricks easily if done incorrectly.
