What Can I Use My Cal Grant A For

Can I use pell grant or cal grant money to buy a car?

The money can be use towards educational purposes like tutitions, fees, books and transportation right? This counts towards my transportation since I need to get to college everyday.

I know i have to wait till my college send the check

How can I put my Cal grant B on hold?

Call the financial aid office. You may have to reapply for it next year.

Can I use my cal grant at a community college if I go for an Associates degree? ?

That depends on what type of Cal Grant you have. Cal Grant A can only be used at a four-year university. You will have to place it on "hold" with the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) for up to 6 semesters, and then it will be available for you to use when you transfer. If you have been awarded a Cal Grant B however, this can be used at either a two-year technical school, two-year community or private college, OR a four-year university. The catch is, Cal Grant B awards are considerable less than Cal Grant A awards.

If you are not sure what type of Cal Grant you have, you should contact CSAC, or, better yet, create an account for yourself on the Cal Grant WebGrants website at https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov. Then you can access all your Cal Grant information online, and place a "Community College hold" on your Cal Grant A if you need to.

PS: you are better off NOT using your Cal Grant at a community college. You will more than likely be eligible for a Board of Governor's Fee Waiver which pays your registration costs at a California Community College. Save the Cal Grant for when you transfer to a four-year university where tuition will be MUCH more expensive and there is NOT a fee waiver available to you.

Can I use my CAL GRANT money for my housing and other things?

All financial aid is first applied to your tuition and fees. Then if you're living on campus it's applied to your housing bill. Anything left over after that is sent to you. However, if you need this money now to put down a deposit then it won't help with that. If the deposit is applied to your account then you can get that money back later but your financial aid will not be applied to your account until a few days before classes begin and your refund could be 4-6 weeks after that.

I forgot to fill out my cal grant by the deadline, should i still fill it out?

If you forgot to complete and submit the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form by the March 3 deadline, then you cannot complete it now. The deadline has passed and you will no longer be considered.

However, you should ALWAYS still complete the FAFSA for the Pell Grant. No, filing after the March deadline will not effect your Pell Grant eligiblity in any way as the deadline is only applicable to the Cal Grant. You can file the 08-09 FAFSA all the way through June 30, 2009 (but of course, it's always better to file ASAP).

As far as whether or not you have to be full-time to receive a Pell Grant: that varies from student to student. Based on the income information and your calculated Expected Family Contribution, some students may be eligible for a small amount of aide even they take only 1 unit, while others must be full-time in order to receive any grant money at all. Once your school receives your FAFSA information they will determine your eligibility and notify you via an Award Letter. If you are still unsure of your eligibility and how many units you must take to be eligible, it is best that you speak with a Financial Aid Counselor at your school's Financial Aid Office.

How much does the Cal Grant and Pell Grant help pay for Cal State schools?

My EFC is 0 and I have always received the max amount of pell grants at my community college. However, I'm no longer accepting pell grants because I'd rather use my pell grants for when I am at a Cal State.

I'm doing the required courses to transfer to Cal State San Marcos. My EFC is 0 and most likely will be for my entire college career.

I was wondering, as a student at a Cal State, how much of your tutition gets covered by grants? I qualify for the max amount of the cal and pell grant. At my community college I'm eligible for just over $6k in a pell grant.

I heard that when you are at a cal state, you get a larger grant? Is this true? Is it possible to pay your cal state tuition with just grants? Do grants at least cover a majority of your tuition at a cal state?

Can I put my cal grant & FAFSA money on reserve?

Go ahead & add the community college to your FAFSA

and, if there is a way, to your Cal Grant application as well

Go ahead & start the admissions process at the community college.....
and do whatever Fin Aid paperwork is required
They can put together an award letter & let you know what you can expect

You might want to find out from the Community College when the Fin Aid deadline is.... at our local school, people only have about 1 more month to get everything turned in if they plan to start Fall term in Aug

Let the CC know that your "Plan A is to stay at USC" but if that doesn't work, then "Plan B is to go to Community College"

You can't put money on reserve or on hold
only a school can "hold" money & even then only for use at their school & only for the academic year

When will i receive money for my cal grant?
