What Comes Before The Offertory

How to pray over an offering (at church)?

Why should a prayer be long? A prayer should be honest, sincere and thankful. You should say whatever comes from your heart and not worry about how long it is. If other people think it is too short or something then they are free to add to the prayer.

Breanna, I have to tell you I don't think God is so much concerned about how you pray over an offering as He is about how you present yourself, speaking specifically about your profane web name. God wants you to be for real - He doesn't care much for pretenders. "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. " Ephesians 5:3-7 Sorry to be so blunt, but you are young and if this is the kind of start your getting off to, where will you be in 10 years?

When a company does a secondary offering at a discount, can the investors who bought those shares sell immediately into the public market?

I think there may be some confusion on terms. In traditional securities law terminology, a secondary offering is a registered offering of shares by individuals along side the sale of shares by the company. A classic case is a company doing an IPO and some of the founders of the company selling some of their shares along side the company. In a case like this, there would typically be no discount - the shares are identical to each other and offered on the same terms. And there would typically be no restrictions because they are registered shares sold with proper disclosures and purchased on an exchange. You may be thinking about a situation where a venture backed pre-IPO company has some of its shares come onto the market in connection with things like employee option exercises, etc. This happened, for example, with both Twitter and Facebook before their IPOs. This is technically a secondary offering in the sense that the company is not issuing the shares directly, but rather an employee is offering them. This is a MUCH murkier situation in many ways and the shares will almost certainly have significant restrictions. It is murky because these are unregistered shares and such shares generally have stiff contractual restrictions on transfer. These transactions are generally done pursuant to SEC exemptions and special waivers/consents in relation to the contractual prohibitions. (Though many people fear that a lot of these transactions are not always 100% kosher, especially subsequent transfers - buyer beware.)If you were to buy shares like these in a transaction like this, they would almost certainly be legended shares with severe restrictions on onward transfer and likely a contractual lock-up agreement as well saying that they cannot be sold until 180 days or even 270 days after any IPO. Thus the reason for the discount.

Prayer for offering at church?

An offertory prayer usually thanks God for His provision and acknowledges that He is the giver of all things. Typically you ask that He will bless the offerers, what is offered and that it will bring glory to Him and expand His kingdom.

In all prayers it is a good to ask God to forgive all present for their sins and ask for all to be lead by His Holy Spirit. You should thank Him for Christ's sacrifice and pray it all in Jesus name.

Add your personal sentiments as it is really a conversation between you and God.

What is the difference between a sin offering and a burnt offering in the Bible?

The sin offering occurred when a person transgressed a commandment. It is effectively a confession that death is the only true recompense for sin. As with all the animal offerings it must be slain by the one offering it and its blood sprinkled on the altar which represents one’s own lifeblood being poured out. It’s purpose is to bring the person back into fellowship with God on the basis of His forgiveness. The sin offering highlighted the fact that it is sin that alienates the Israelite from the covenant and that one must be free from sin before God can be approached. This ultimately spoke of Messiah looking forward.A burnt offering is an offering of dedication that requires the entire beast to be consumed by fire. It is unusual in that the animal is dismembered and the intestines cleaned before everything but the skin is consumed by fire. This, in contrast to the sin offering, is an offering of service to Yahweh, symbolising the dedication of one’s entire self—not just one’s body but one’s mind, heart and inner strength also. Like the sin offering (which may precede it) the lifeblood of the animal, which represents the sinner’s own blood, is sprinkled on the altar to show that one’s life is required for sin before one can serve God faithfully. So to serve God one must ‘die’ and be ‘reborn’ through God’s forgiveness.Ultimately these offerings were made legitimate in Christ’s sinless sacrifice. He becomes the high priest and the altar itself. That explanation is for another time.

What does Matthew 5:24 Mean Leave gift at alter?

Peace be with you mate,

For Christians this refers to the partaking of Holy Communion.
The gift refers to the oblation which is offered upon the altar.
If one is feuding with one's brother in Christ then one ought to be reconciled with one's brother before partaking lest one bring damnation upon one's self (1st Corinthians 11:29).
This is the kind of reason why we in the Coptic Church greet one another with an holy kiss of charity (1st Peter 5:14) then in peace lift up our hearts and hands to our Lord before partaking of His Holy Communion.

May the Light of God unite all His people.

P.S.
Just for those who might doubt that Christian Churches must have altars, Hebrews 13:10 clearly states that those who serve the Temple are not worthy to eat therefrom.
What other gift do Christians bring to their altars?
Is the sacrifice of praise eaten by anybody?

Why was Frampton Comes Alive so popular?

It’s one of the best rock albums of all time. When it came out, I was 13, and hadn’t even heard of Peter Frampton, but the summer of ’76 was all about this album, for me at least. Every time “Do You Feel Like We Do” played on the radio, I fell more in love with it. People ask about “Most Epic Guitar Solos” frequently here, and that live version, with its incredible talk box solo, is absolutely a top 10 list member. But there is a whole lot more on that album to love. For example, the first tune, “Something’s Happening” is a really great tune, with an extremely good solo, that almost no one ever talks about. Frampton is and was such a fantastic soloist - so musical, and absolutely with his own sound. He should be high on every list of great rock guitarists.“Lines On My Face” is a very special song for me. It’s hard to put into words how that song affects me to this day. The chorus is especially touching, and something about the way the words and music coalesce just gives me goosebumps. (“I saw where you came from, called out your name, but there’s no answer”). It also has a great guitar solo that just oozes with emotion and fits perfectly with the rest of the song. The live performance on this record is truly a special moment preserved for the ages.1976 was an extremely good year for music, and “Frampton Comes Alive” was a fantastic celebration of the inspiration, energy, and authenticity of that period. I have never met Peter Frampton, but I think he’s one of the most positive, inspiring, and sincere people in the history of Rock. If you watch his videos from this era, you can see what a real artist, at the peak of his creative powers, really looks like. It’s not something many people see today.

Why does Jesus say that you must reconcile with your brother before offering a gift at the altar?

Your question seems to say that Jesus' command is no longer valid. If that is true, I believe that this is incorrect for the following reason.
Jesus himself said that he did not come to invalidate the law. In fact, He said that not the least stroke of the pen would pass away. The laws that were given by God were created for a purpose. The purpose of the law is to reveal to us that we sin and cannot stop ourselves from sinning. We are in need of salvation from our nature, which is corrupt.
In 1 John it says that if you can't love your brother whom you can see, how can you love God whom you can't see? Jesus also says, "Whatsoever you have done unto the least of these you have done unto me."
Your concept of what God requires of a Christian may be more casual than God's view of the issue. Jesus gave his life for us, and the apostle Paul told us that "You are bought with a price, you are not your own, therefore Honor God with your body" This verse seems to indicate that the devotion God requires is total. Again, we are sinners and we cannot possibly live up to this, but I believe that God requires humility and devotion, not because He needs these things but because living life His way is better for us. The passage you quote appears differently in this light. I believe that the "gift" it speaks of is the gift of our special talents that we can use to serve in the church (ie setting up chairs, or doing the sound at church, or working on a church committee) and I don't believe that it is invalid in any way. I hope this answers your question or at least gives you something to think about.

Where did the word "Holocaust" come from?

holocaust (n.)mid-13c., "sacrifice by fire, burnt offering," from Old French holocauste (12c.), or directly from Late Latin holocaustum, from Greek holokauston "a thing wholly burnt," neuter of holokaustos "burned whole," from holos "whole" (from PIE root *sol-"whole, well-kept") + kaustos, verbal adjective of kaiein "to burn" (see caustic).Originally a Bible word for "burnt offerings," given wider figurative sense of "massacre, destruction of a large number of persons" from 1670s. The Holocaust "Nazi genocide of European Jews in World War II," first recorded 1957, earlier known in Hebrew as Shoah "catastrophe." The word itself was used in English in reference to Hitler's Jewish policies from 1942, but not as a proper name for them.Origin and meaning of holocaust by Online Etymology Dictionary
